Vessel

“Vessel” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4″ x 4″; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve just added a new painting to the In Our Veins series titled Vessel, and it is 4″ x 4,” acrylic on canvas, $100.  It was created from a sketch I did three years ago (!) and just wasn’t able to incorporate it at the time.  I was reminded of it when going through my sketchbooks the other day and found that it was perfect for this series.  The moth, which I took artistic liberty with, represents life.  It can be viewed as life either leaving the body or entering it, that is entirely up to the viewer.  No matter how it is viewed, life is part of us for a certain period of time.  It transitions from one living organism to the next.  The body contains life- it is a vessel.  To view a larger image, go to: www.amyguidry.com/vessel.html.

Beautiful Crime

The UK contemporary art news site Beautiful Crime recently did a Spotlight feature on my latest body of work, In Our Veins.  Editor Ruthie Holloway said of my work, “Balancing on the edge of both photorealism and pop surrealism, American artist, Amy Guidry paints nature with an intricate hand and an inventive mind. Drawing on various influential subject matter as varied as dreams and C.S. Lewis novel characters, Guidry’s world of strange, human-like and captivating characters of animals lends the viewer an unusual insight in to her surrealist yet photorealist painted world – check out the skeletal characters contrasted with the intricately painted rock formations as testament.”  Many paintings from the series are featured which you can read about here: http://beautifulcrime.com/contemporary-art/spotlight-surrealist-painter-amy-guidry.

Sold

"Spring" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 5" x 5"; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2009

I just realized that I’ve been slacking a bit and did exactly what I would tell other artists not to do.  I forgot to get photos of a few paintings.  They were in an exhibit almost immediately after being finished, hence the mistake.  Though I’ve had plenty of time since then to rectify it….  One is now sold, which at least if I need a photo of it I can get one from the buyer, but that is not always the case, therefore it’s important to always document.  The good news is I do have a photo of the other painting that sold- Spring.  Both paintings are acrylic on canvas, 5″ x 5″ each, and from my New Realm series, which you can see the larger paintings in the series here: www.amyguidry.com/beginning.html.

Succession

“Succession” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6″w x 12″h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve just finished another painting in the In Our Veins series while simultaneously working on my painting One for The Great West Coast Migration exhibit.  This painting is titled Succession and is 6″ wide by 12″ high, acrylic on canvas.  It just arrived at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX the other day and will be included in their upcoming show, 100 Degrees, starting August 4th through September 1st.  When working on this piece, I was thinking of orders- biological orders, our need for order, hierarchy.  The human skull at the bottom leads up to larger animals and butterflies, illustrating how new life grows and is sustained by dead organisms.  The horse and the rose at the top- though I took artistic liberty with the rose- utilize their placement and size to emphasize their importance.  While humans may be the more dominant species, I wanted to focus on the significance and the role of other species in nature.

View the painting online here: www.amyguidry.com/succession.html.  You can also see it in person at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX during the 100 Degrees Preview Party on August 2nd from 6-8pm and during the opening reception August 4th from 6-8pm.

Perspective

"Perspective" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4" x 4"; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve just added another new painting to my In Our Veins series.  It is a 4″ x 4″ painting, acrylic on canvas, $100, titled Perspective.  This is yet another example of why I use such tiny paintbrushes.  The hare heads are about the size of a dime.  The heads are representative of the typical view of animals- that they are simply a means to an end and are just parts and pieces we use or eat as opposed to sentient beings.  I, however, don’t see them this way- hence the title Perspective– which is why I depict them in a manner that emphasizes the expressions of their faces or light colored, “human-looking” eyes.

View the painting and purchase information on my website here: www.amyguidry.com/perspective.html.
