Louisiana Voices

"The Wild West" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 24"w x 30"h; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

You may recall awhile back my mention of this upcoming exhibition.  It has been scheduled for close to a year and now the opening is right around the corner!  Louisiana Voices: Six Artists Speak to Us will be held at the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum in Lafayette, LA as part of the Louisiana Bicentennial.  A couple of artists have been added since that early post so the featured artists are Melissa Bonin, Linda Trappey Dautreuil, Troy Dugas, Amy Guidry, Lisa Osborn, and Marjorie Pierson.  The exhibition will open September 15th with a reception the night before on September 14th from 6-8pm.

The exhibition will remain up through December 8th, so there will be plenty of opportunity to see the exhibit even if you miss the opening reception.  I should mention there will also be an exhibition panel discussion on September 29th at 2pm.  For more information about the exhibit visit: http://museum.louisiana.edu/exhibitions.

From my collection

I recently got another piece to add to my own art collection.  This one is by Alli Bratt, a fellow vegan artist in Portland, called In, Out, and Upside Down.  It’s an acrylic and watercolor on wood, 1 7/8″wide x 11 5/8″high.  As a vegan myself, I especially want to support other vegans and as an artist, I want to support those that are also artists all the while enjoying my new purchase.  I have yet to put it in its “official” spot, as I have big plans to paint walls and arrange other works with it, but I’ve posted a photo of the painting which you can view below.  And you can check out more of Alli’s work on her website: http://allisonjbratt.com/.

100 Degrees

This summer has been incredibly busy to say the least.  I’ve had to miss out on openings for shows because I’m already at the opening for another.  I suppose these are the moments I could use a stunt double…  At least I can vicariously enjoy the Wally Workman Gallery opening for 100 Degrees thanks to the photos.  The exhibit is up now through September 1st and features new work by several of the gallery’s artists.  One of which being mine… you may recognize this painting from an earlier post.  You can also view it here: www.amyguidry.com/succession.html.

Sold

"Symbiotic" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 11"w x 14"h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

Another painting from my In Our Veins series will have a new home.  Symbiotic is an acrylic on canvas, 11″w x 14″h.  There is a good bit of history to this piece- for starters, it comes from one of the original sketches I did in the early stages of the series.  Because I do these sketches while I am currently working on other paintings, it can be quite some time before they come to fruition.  Needless to say, I have lived with the concept for Symbiotic for awhile.  Also, it was this year’s Best of Show winner in the Surreal Salon held at the Baton Rouge Gallery Center for Contemporary Art.  As a result of my win, it was featured in ads in both Juxtapoz and Hi-Fructose magazine.  I’m happy that it will be in good hands and joining a fantastic collection of work.

New Realm Review

"Adaptation" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 36"w x 48"h; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

My recent New Realm solo exhibition received a great review on the Southern contemporary art blog, Louisianaesthetic.  Reggie Michael Rodrigue said of my work, “It’s basically about the ability to choose one’s direction or directions without distraction, without shackles, and without having to ask for permission from the powers that be. Guidry seems to be saying that the real power resides inside all of us, whether we are innies, outties are something in between. We can all be “forces of nature” as long as we tend to ourselves and our surroundings with diligence, curiosity, wisdom and love.”  Exactly.  Read the review online at: http://louisianaesthetic.com/2012/07/22/beauty-and-the-beasts-in-the-new-realm-amy-guidry-at-lafayettes-ballet-academy/  .

Recycling at its best

Recycled shipping boxes and cardboard = awesome cat scratcher

One thing people may not realize is that as an artist, I have to keep a LARGE supply of packing materials on hand.  Much of it consists of boxes and tissue paper or kraft paper, so I recycle whatever I can.  For instance, tissue paper that ends up in return shipments can be used again in other shipments or I use it when wrapping gifts.  Thanks to Design Sponge, I found a great use for corrugated cardboard- DIY cat scratchers!  This is actually a photo of the first one I made modeled by Tiny, the cat.  Warning: this project will give your Carpal Tunnel a workout, depending on the thickness of cardboard, so be sure to take many breaks.  Cute results, though.

Chased

Chased magazine feature: Phantastic Images by Amy Guidry

I’m a little late in posting about this but my work was recently featured on Chased, an online arts magazine based in Berlin.  The feature includes many of my recent paintings from my series In Our Veins.  Editor Sandra Ratkovic said of my work, “We like her surreal, very contemporary paintings showing animals and nature in a dreamy surroundings, sprinkling with an almost smart cruelty. That definitely makes you think about the pictures´ meanings. We ask ourself who did this to the animals, and what do they stand for.”  To view the feature, go to this direct link: http://www.chasedmagazine.com/2012/07/gallery-phantastic-images-by-amy-guidry/.

Vessel

“Vessel” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4″ x 4″; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve just added a new painting to the In Our Veins series titled Vessel, and it is 4″ x 4,” acrylic on canvas, $100.  It was created from a sketch I did three years ago (!) and just wasn’t able to incorporate it at the time.  I was reminded of it when going through my sketchbooks the other day and found that it was perfect for this series.  The moth, which I took artistic liberty with, represents life.  It can be viewed as life either leaving the body or entering it, that is entirely up to the viewer.  No matter how it is viewed, life is part of us for a certain period of time.  It transitions from one living organism to the next.  The body contains life- it is a vessel.  To view a larger image, go to: www.amyguidry.com/vessel.html.

Another painting from the In Our Veins series has found a new home.  Untitled (Desert) is an acrylic on canvas, 4″ x 4,” and will be joining a couple of my other paintings.  It is actually a spin-off from one of my larger paintings, Heads II which can be seen here: www.amyguidry.com/Heads_II.html (and FYI Heads II is one of the paintings included in the upcoming show I’m doing at the Hilliard Museum in Lafayette, LA this September).  View a larger image of Untitled (Desert) here: www.amyguidry.com/untitled04.html.

Beautiful Crime

The UK contemporary art news site Beautiful Crime recently did a Spotlight feature on my latest body of work, In Our Veins.  Editor Ruthie Holloway said of my work, “Balancing on the edge of both photorealism and pop surrealism, American artist, Amy Guidry paints nature with an intricate hand and an inventive mind. Drawing on various influential subject matter as varied as dreams and C.S. Lewis novel characters, Guidry’s world of strange, human-like and captivating characters of animals lends the viewer an unusual insight in to her surrealist yet photorealist painted world – check out the skeletal characters contrasted with the intricately painted rock formations as testament.”  Many paintings from the series are featured which you can read about here: http://beautifulcrime.com/contemporary-art/spotlight-surrealist-painter-amy-guidry.
