Goings On

Many probably view summer as a time for a break… eventually I may get to that point. I’ve been switching gears from one show to the next and have a few blog appearances. And I’ve sold two older works that were the “last of their kind,” so to speak. If you’ve been following along, you may recall that I’ve just wrapped up a show with the Schepis Museum. I have three more events coming up, though, and they are right around the corner. First, my work will be in the 2010 Art Melt in Baton Rouge, LA at the Louisiana State Museum (July 15th is the Preview show). Next up is the 30th Anniversary Exhibition at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX (August 7th from 6-8pm). Then I will have work in the “Hot August Night” event at The Oak Street Gallery in Hammond, LA (August 20th from 6-10pm).

My work has recently been featured on several blogs and I recently did an interview for Innsmouth Free Press which will be up in August. Check out my work on Chainsaws and Jelly at http://www.chainsawsandjelly.com/2010/06/artist-amy-guidry.html and on One Surrealist a Day at http://onesurrealistaday.com/page/90 and Don’t Panic at http://sputniked.tumblr.com/post/704226904/untitled-heads. August in Austin

I always enjoy my visits to Austin, Texas since there’s so much to do and so much to look at- it’s absolutely beautiful. And it just so happens that I am represented by one of their great galleries- Wally Workman Gallery. So this August, I will be in Austin for Wally Workman’s 30th Anniversary show. This will be a huge show, so it’s a good thing the gallery is large itself. All of the represented artists will be showing several new works. Add that up and it’s colossal. And let’s not forget- thirty years! This speaks volumes in the art world where- unfortunately- many galleries don’t make it two years, much less thirty. So in celebration, Wally Workman Gallery is having a show preview on August 5th in conjunction with First Thursday Artwalk. The blowout party and opening reception will be held August 7th from 6-8pm. And if you can’t make either of those evenings (or both!), the exhibit will be up through August 28th.

As for me, I have been toiling away on a new piece to submit for the show. It’s 3 feet long, so this is one of the biggest pieces I’ve done in this latest series of work. I have included a sneak peek- just a small portion of the painting. It’s not the best photo either since I took it myself.  Haha.   But it gives the basic idea… and of course I will be posting the painting in its entirety once it’s officially finished. So in the meantime, if you’d like to see more of my work, be sure to visit www.AmyGuidry.com.

Evolving

I’m happy to say that two of my paintings have sold over the past week. That’s one thing about holiday shopping that I don’t mind. It goes without saying, but art is an original and personal gift, so I’m always delighted when someone wants to give one of my creations to their loved ones. That said, my painting, “Evolving” is now going to make someone’s Christmas merry. If you are unfamiliar, “Evolving” is from my New Realm series, which you can view in its entirety at www.AmyGuidry.com.

"Food or Pet? How Do You Decide?" by Amy Guidry

And if you read my blog often, you will be more than familiar with this painting- “Food or Pet? How Do You Decide?” This piece is currently in the “Feast” exhibition at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin (you may recall me mentioning it…). It sold just the other day, though it may or may not be a gift. Could be a gift to one’s self… This painting comes from my social commentary series, which is also on my website.

So with that said, I’m off to take care of my own holiday errands. (And get some new photos of my next painting…so be sure to check back.)

Feast: A Photo Diary. Sure to Leave You Hungry For More (Ha ha)

Reflection of my painting, "Food or Pet? How Do You Decide?"
The “Feast” exhibit is currently on display at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX. My painting, “Food or Pet? How Do You Decide?” is featured in the window of the gallery and was used as the image for the show. It was also selected for the upcoming event, “Edible Austin,” in which chefs will create their culinary interpretations of my painting. I hope they realize you can do a lot with tofu…

I was at the opening reception last weekend and have a few photos to share. The entire album will be posted on my website soon (www.AmyGuidry.com), so be on the lookout.

Amy Guidry with her painting, "Acceptance"
On the upstairs level of the gallery, various works by the gallery’s represented artists were also on display. I took the opportunity to pose with my painting, “Acceptance” from my New Realm series.

"Boarfish" by Amy Guidry; From the New Realm series. (C) Amy Guidry 2009

I’ve recently sold another painting from my New Realm series. This one is titled “Boarfish” and was recently on exhibit at Galerie Lafayette in Lafayette, LA. I wanted to spotlight this character from a larger piece I had done titled “Acceptance.” BTW, “Acceptance” is now at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX, so if you’re in the area, you should stop by to see it in person. It’s definitely a conversation starter to say the least. And since many people ask, here’s something educational for you (see, you can actually LEARN things on my blog…you’ll thank me later when this comes up on Jeopardy). According to Wikipedia, Boarfish is the common name of two unrelated groups of fishes: All fish of the family Caproidae are called boarfish. Some fish of the family Pentacerotidae are called boarfish. For the record, I knew nothing of this when I came up with my paintings, I just like boars and fish a lot. So I combined the two to create a friendly “beast” for my surreal fairytale. And if you’d like to see more of this series, be sure to visit my website at www.AmyGuidry.com

Forgot to Mention…

"Food or Pet? How Do You Decide" by Amy Guidry, Feast postcard invitation

I’m excited to announce that in addition to the upcoming exhibition at Wally Workman Gallery, my painting “Food or Pet? How Do You Decide?” has been selected for the show invitation! So if you happen to be on the gallery mailing list, be on the lookout. As a reminder, “Feast” opens on December 5th from 6-8pm at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX.

Two Exhibits, One Day

“Food or Pet? How Do You Decide?” by Amy Guidry; SOLD; (C) Amy Guidry 2009

I’m going out with a bang this year… just when I thought it was calming down. Ha! I will have work in two upcoming exhibits- the opening reception for both is on the same night.  First, I am one of the invited artists in the Wally Workman Gallery exhibition, “Feast.” The title of the show does not necessarily pertain to food, so feast is open to interpretation. There is a preview of the show on December 3rd, from 6-8pm as part of their First Thursday Artwalk. The actual opening reception will be December 5th, from 6-8pm. In addition, they are hosting FINE FOOD ART NIGHT on December 10th 6-8pm. Edible Austin magazine will also be there for an evening of fine food and fine art. Local food tastings provided by the Austin chapter of Les Dames de Escoffier and local catering companies will be creating their culinary interpretations of pieces from the show. A portion of the proceeds will go to Urban Roots, a youth development program that uses sustainable agriculture as a means to transform the lives of young people and to increase the access of healthy food in Austin.

In addition, I will be participating in an art auction during Le Feu et l’Eau Rural Arts Celebration. Also known as the Fire and Water Festival. The Fire and Water Festival has a “warmup” event on December 4th from 7-11pm. The schedule has not been announced yet, but I can tell you it will most certainly involve lots of live music and lots of food. The actual event and auction will take place on December 5th from 11am-11pm.

So if you’ll be in Austin, TX, be sure to check out Wally Workman’s exhibit. And if you’e in Arnaudville, LA, check out the Fire and Water Festival. And if you’re able to teleport, do both. And if you can’t make it to either one, there’s always www.AmyGuidry.com

The latest volume of Studio Visit Magazine has arrived! I just got my copy the other day. It’s Volume 5, the Spring 2009 edition. My work was selected (again…yea!) for inclusion. My painting, “Adaptation,” from my “New Realm” series is featured.

The juror for the Spring 2009 issue was Michael Klein, an independent curator and private art dealer. He was the former Director of the International Sculpture Center and former Curator of the Microsoft Art Collection. Studio Visit is published by the Open Studios Press.

Studio Visit is the new sister publication to New American Paintings.  In contrast to New American Paintings, Studio Visit Magazine is an internationally juried publication featuring 2-D and 3-D artwork.  Featured jurors are internationally recognized professionals in the art industry.

My painting “Adaptation” was accepted for inclusion. (See photo on the top right.) It is from my “New Realm” series and is currently at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX, which is one of my representing galleries.

Sold

"Reflecting" by Amy Guidry; From the New Realm series. Copyright Amy Guidry 2009

I received some good news from Wally Workman Gallery in Austin today.  They sold one of my New Realm 5 x 5 paintings while at the gallery.  I recently obtained representation with them, so I am glad that they’ve sold a painting for me, especially given the timing (i.e. economy).  So now my piece “Reflecting” will be in its new home soon.

If you are in Texas, you should stop by Wally Workman Gallery to view my work in person.  I do not have an exhibit with them at this time, but they do have several of my paintings in the gallery.  But if you are unable or if you’d like to see more of my work, you can go to my website at www.AmyGuidry.com.
