Art Melt 2011

"Trophy" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6" x 6"; (c) Amy Guidry 2011

After waiting for the (delayed) results, I’ve finally received word that my work was accepted into the upcoming Art Melt at the Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge, LA.  My painting “Trophy” (from my “In Our Veins” series) was selected.  The jurors for this year’s competition were Rachel Wolff (Brooklyn-based critic, writer, and editor); Benjamin Hickey (Curator, Masur Museum of Art, Monroe, LA); and Kelli Scott Kelley (Artist and Associate Professor of Painting, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA).

There will be a Preview Party on July 14th from 6:30-10pm in which there will be an open bar, food prepared by Heirloom Cuisine throughout the entire evening, and live performances by the band King James and the Special Men and Of Moving Colors dance troupe.  Tickets are available through www.ArtMelt.org.  The opening reception will be July 16th from 5-10pm and is open to the public.  The exhibit will be up through August 28th.

For a close-up view of “Trophy” as well as my other paintings, visit my website at this direct link: www.amyguidry.com/trophy.html.

Rivers

"Synergy" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 8" x 12"; (c) Amy Guidry 2011

I have another exhibition coming up next month, which is actually only a few weeks away.  I will have work in the “Rivers” group exhibition at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, Texas opening July 9th, 2011.  The theme is open to interpretation, so it won’t be all water scenes and landscapes.  My painting “Synergy” will be in the show, in addition to other works I have in the salon area of the gallery.  “Synergy” is an acrylic on canvas, 8″ wide by 11″ high.  I picked this piece for the exhibit given that rivers nurture life.  The roots and veins in the painting bring life to everything above and below the ground via rivers of blood or rivers of water.  All of these elements working together, nurturing each other, nurturing life.  You can view a larger image (with a zoom-in feature, as well) at www.AmyGuidry.com/synergy.html.

The exhibit officially opens July 9th, with a reception from 6-8pm.  However, there will be a preview of the show coinciding with First Thursday Artwalk on July 7th from 6-8pm.

And one more reminder: June 26th is the opening for 54th Chautauqua Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art at the VACI in Chautauqua, NY in which I was one of the 25 selected artists. The reception is from 3-5pm with a talk by juror Jim Kempner of Jim Kempner Fine Art, NYC.

VACI

"Renewal" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; (c) Amy Guidry 2011

I’ve received more good news recently- my work was selected for inclusion in the 54th Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art at the VACI (Visual Arts at Chautauqua Institution). The juror for the exhibit is Jim Kempner of the Jim Kempner Gallery in New York City. My painting “Renewal” from my New Realm series was selected and it is an acrylic on canvas, 48″ wide by 24″ high. The exhibition will take place in the Strohl Art Center of the Visual Arts at Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York. There will be an opening reception held on Sunday, June 26th from 3-5pm. The exhibit will remain on display through July 14, 2011.

549 Exhibit

The group exhibition at Gallery 549 featuring some of my latest paintings is coming down this week. I have a few photos to share from the opening reception and there are even more on my (newly redesigned!) website at this direct link- www.amyguidry.com/events.html (Go to the album at the top left). So now I am gearing up for my next show which will be in Austin at Wally Workman Gallery. More details on that closer to time. In the meantime, check out the photos!

549 in April

"Synergy" by Amy Guidry, acrylic on canvas, 8" x 10", (c) Amy Guidry 2011 If you live in Lafayette, Louisiana, or even in the Acadiana area, you are probably familiar with Gallery 549. Gallery 549 is one of several gallery hot-spots during Artwalk in downtown Lafayette, and one of my personal favorites to visit. So I’m happy to say that I will be showing there next month as part of the annual Spring group exhibition. I’ll be showing works from my “In Our Veins” series, all new and not previously exhibited- so this will be their debut! If you are in the area, this is your chance to see my work in person. I show all over the country, so I really love it when I have the opportunity to show in a local venue so that friends and family can attend. The opening reception will be held during the Second Saturday Artwalk in April (which will be April 9th) from 6-8pm. Hope to see you there!

Oh, and for those of you who are out of area, you can visit my work virtually at www.AmyGuidry.com.

The Prospect New Orleans Benefit- Throwdown.1.5- last Saturday was a big hit. Many people were in attendance after the Julia St. Artwalk in New Orleans. My painting “Kerry” now has a new home (see previous post). And I met some other exhibiting artists as well. So if you missed the event, here are a few photos to enjoy the event vicariously. Today marks the opening of “Insatiable: Our Rapacious Appetite for More” at the Kniznick Gallery located in the Women’s Studies Research Center of Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. I’m excited to be a part of this show as well as showing at such a prestigious university. The opening will be next month, but the exhibition is up as of today. Sometimes it’s nice just to go to a show before the opening (i.e. crowds) to get a good look at the work. This is actually a juried exhibition which was curated by Judy Haberl, Professor of Sculpture at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The show takes a look at consumerism in all forms- money, food, sex, power, etc. and the effects of such on our planet and its inhabitants. The exhibit is open now through March 15th, with the opening reception taking place on February 3, 2011 from 5-7:30pm.

And here is a list of participating artists: Edie Bresler, Donna Catanzaro, Marie Picard Craig, Marli Diestel, Anthony Fisher, Virginia Fitzgerald, Karen Frostig, Katerie Gladdys, Justin Goodall, Amy Guidry, Hope Hardesty, Max Heller, Rachael Jablo, Lauren Kalman, Sam Keller, Minsung Keyoung, Kirstin Lamb, Anne Lambert, Yvonne Love & Gabrielle Russomagno, So Yoon Lym, Leslie Macklin, Monika Malewska, Elizabeth Michelman, Mitzi Lynn Mize, Morrix, Nancy Morrow, Kathleen O’Hara, Anne Percoco, Rachel Bee Porter, Nina Prader, Gina Randazzo, Kayla Risko, Andrea Rosenthal, Alison Safford, Rosalie Ripaldi Shane, Kirsten Rae Simonsen, Gulin Sungur, Douglas Tausik,Dylan Vitone, Callie Wile, and April Wood

2 for 1 Week

MYSELF exhibition, University of Nevada, Reno
MYSELF exhibition, University of Nevada, Reno

I happen to have two shows going on this week, well opening that is. As you may recall, my work was selected for the MYSELF exhibition at the Sheppard Fine Art Gallery of the University of Nevada, Reno. I posted about this months ago, but the time has come and the opening will be taking place this Thursday, January 20th. The reception will take place from 5:30-8pm, with a panel discussion including some of the participating artists during the first hour. The exhibition officially opens today and will remain up through February 18th. The photo on the left is of the cover of the exhibition catalogue, which includes essays by Joy Garnett and Mira Schor.

The second opening is for the 26th Annual International Exhibition taking place at the Meadows Gallery of the University of Texas at Tyler. The opening reception is taking place this evening (!!) so if you are in the Texas area, be sure to stop by. The reception will be held from 6-7:30pm, with the exhibit remaining up through March 4th. The juror for the exhibit is renowned artist Cotter Luppi.

“Like a Prayer”- Opening Reception

I nearly forgot to post photos for the exhibition I have going on right now… the opening reception was in November, but the exhibit is currently open through December 30th. (So there’s still time to see it even if you are stuck in a shopping mall somewhere until the 25th.) I have a few photos to share from opening night for “Like a Prayer: Reflections on the 21st C Feminine” at Barrister’s Gallery in New Orleans, LA. More photos are on my website under Events- www.AmyGuidry.com. The show was curated by Martina Batan, Director of Ronald Feldman Fine Art, New York.  There was a great crowd and in conjunction with the St. Claude Arts District (SCAD) 2nd Saturday Artwalk, the Multispecies Salon 3 was also open. Very busy night! If you missed out, you can still see “Like a Prayer” at Barrister’s, now through Dec. 30th.
