Many probably view summer as a time for a break… eventually I may get to that point. I’ve been switching gears from one show to the next and have a few blog appearances. And I’ve sold two older works that were the “last of their kind,” so to speak. If you’ve been following along, you may recall that I’ve just wrapped up a show with the Schepis Museum. I have three more events coming up, though, and they are right around the corner. First, my work will be in the 2010 Art Melt in Baton Rouge, LA at the Louisiana State Museum (July 15th is the Preview show). Next up is the 30th Anniversary Exhibition at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX (August 7th from 6-8pm). Then I will have work in the “Hot August Night” event at The Oak Street Gallery in Hammond, LA (August 20th from 6-10pm).

My work has recently been featured on several blogs and I recently did an interview for Innsmouth Free Press which will be up in August. I received news the other day that my work was selected for this year’s Art Melt in Baton Rouge. So looks like my new work is going to get some more exposure! The 2010 Art Melt will be held at a new venue this year- the Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge, LA. The jurors for this year’s exhibit were Andrea Pollan, the Executive Director of the Curator’s Office in Washington D.C; Denny Mecham, the Executive Director of the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi, Mississippi; and Paul Dean, Associate Professor at the LSU School of Art in Baton Rouge, LA. The exhibit will open July 16th and remain up through August 28th. There will be a preview party on July 15th from 6:30-10pm.

You may recall I posted a small piece of my latest work on here. Although it’s not finished yet, I do have a good chunk done to show you. This time it’s roughly one and a half feet wide. I’m calling this piece “Survival of the Fittest.” After all the hours and days and months (!) I’ve invested in this piece, I’m starting to think this is a test of my own fitness. I’m no quitter, though, so I will be posting the finished piece soon!

This will be my latest addition to my series, “In Our Veins.” BTW, you can also read more about this series on my website since I’ve recently added an artist statement. And for those of you who are wondering, this is an acrylic on canvas, 36 inches wide by 18 inches high.

Someone recently asked if I ever post photos of my work in progress. Technically yes, but it’s usually just a snippet of a painting. So I dug through some photos for this “photo diary” post of sorts since I actually documented my work on “Untitled.” So here goes:

August in Austin

I always enjoy my visits to Austin, Texas since there’s so much to do and so much to look at- it’s absolutely beautiful. And it just so happens that I am represented by one of their great galleries- Wally Workman Gallery. So this August, I will be in Austin for Wally Workman’s 30th Anniversary show. This will be a huge show, so it’s a good thing the gallery is large itself. All of the represented artists will be showing several new works. Add that up and it’s colossal. And let’s not forget- thirty years! This speaks volumes in the art world where- unfortunately- many galleries don’t make it two years, much less thirty. So in celebration, Wally Workman Gallery is having a show preview on August 5th in conjunction with First Thursday Artwalk. The blowout party and opening reception will be held August 7th from 6-8pm. And if you can’t make either of those evenings (or both!), the exhibit will be up through August 28th.

As for me, I have been toiling away on a new piece to submit for the show. It’s 3 feet long, so this is one of the biggest pieces I’ve done in this latest series of work. I have included a sneak peek- just a small portion of the painting. It’s not the best photo either since I took it myself.  Haha.   But it gives the basic idea… and of course I will be posting the painting in its entirety once it’s officially finished. Studio Visit- Popular Topic These Days

I’ve had a lot of interest in Studio Visit Magazine as of late. Hopefully most of you have found your answers in some of my recent posts. So low and behold, I received an acceptance letter (and email!) from Studio Visit Magazine. My work was selected for inclusion in the Summer 2010 edition. So this will be Volume…10? Not sure, but I think there’s a Winter edition about to come out…then the Summer edition. The juror for this volume was Dina Deitsch, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, deCordova Sculpture Park + Museum in Lincoln, MA. For those who don’t know, Studio Visit is published by The Open Studios Press and is the sister publication to New American Paintings. It is a nationally conducted juried competition featuring 2D and 3D work. Oh, and in case you haven’t seen it- the painting that will be in the magazine is “The Wild West” which I’ve included a small image of here. I have recently finished another addition to my new series of work. This painting is titled “Vulnerable” and will be featured in my group exhibition, 6@549,  at Gallery 549 in Lafayette, LA next month. It’s an acrylic on canvas, 24″ x 12.” I included a hare in the last painting from this series but this time he is a main character. The concept of vulnerability is interesting to me since as humans, we assume that we are invincible- be it physically or emotionally. Obviously this isn’t true, and sometimes it’s the things that we least expect that harm us.

Just a quick post today…sorry, I’m pressed for time and need to get to work in the studio. I have a new painting to share. This is part of my new series (yes, still working on a name for it…I need to pick from the ones that made it to the finals). You can view this series on my website www.AmyGuidry.com. So the new painting is titled “Untitled (Heads)” and is an acrylic on canvas, 20″ x 10.” Not a huge piece, but a good enough size for me to show a lot of detail. I think the pig is my favorite… I’m partial to pigs anyway. This will be part of the group show I will be in at Gallery 549 this March. Oh, and we’ve agreed upon a name- 6@549. Simple, but it works for 6 very different artists.

I’m excited about an upcoming show that’s practically right around the corner. Sure, I’m busy preparing, but I’m looking forward to the debut of my new series. I’m still tossing around some ideas as far as names go, but for right now, I’m just calling it my new work. One of these pieces includes “Fragility” which you can see here to the left. It’s a 6″ x 6″ acrylic on canvas and there are more where that came from.

Okay, details… The show is a group exhibit featuring a total of six female artists. My friend, Deborah Norsworthy, coordinated the show (she used to curate) and will be in the exhibit as well as Diane Pecnik, Marie DesJardins, Lisa Ayres, and Mary Attwood. The exhibit opening will be March 13th from 6-8ish PM at Gallery 549 in downtown Lafayette, LA. This all takes place during Second Saturday Artwalk, so if you live in Acadiana, you should be more than familiar with this event. And if you miss it, you can still catch the show through the beginning of April. Photos for this event will be posted at www.AmyGuidry.com!

Merry Christmas?

I know that it’s the holiday season and all, but I just had to post my newest painting. It’s jolly, I know. I’m fresh out of snowman paintings… Yes, the timing is probably off, but I’m so excited to finally share this new piece. It’s so new I haven’t even named the series yet. Any ideas??

This painting is titled “The Wild West” and is a 24″ x 30″ acrylic on canvas. It’s not on my website yet, as I am working on a couple more pieces to put on there as a group. Otherwise this one would be all by its lonesome. It took me forever to finish this painting. The others are not as grueling, but this one took over 188 hours. I’m surprised my hand hasn’t fallen off.
