Interviews, websites, makeovers, Oh my!

Artist Amy Guidry discusses her work with viewers at Gallery 549

Sorry for the delayed post! I’ve had a lot going on as of late, some of which I would like to announce right now. I recently did an interview for Pop Culture Radio with Chris Wakefield. The interview is now online and has a bit of something for everyone whether you are an artist, a collector, or just an admirer of art. You can listen to the entire interview at this link: http://popcultureradio.net/radio-interview/amy-guidry/.

Also, for some even bigger news and I do mean big- if you’ve been following along you know of this several months long undertaking- my website makeover is finished and the results are now online! The overall design is a bit different (new and improved!) and there are some new added features. For one, the images are now large. And I mean large! Many of them have a zoom-in feature as well. While you are there, be sure to sign up for my e-newsletter. You can also now sign up for my quarterly postcard which features one of my latest paintings on the front and a quick list of exhibits on the back. Many people just like to collect the postcards for the paintings since they also get my newsletter. Sign up for one or for both, they’re all free. Check it out at www.AmyGuidry.com.

The Pack

I’ve just finished another painting in the “In Our Veins” series. This one is titled “The Pack” and is an acrylic on canvas, 20″ wide by 10″ high. I took “some” photos of the painting as I was working on it from start to finish. Going through them, I just think “UGH!” I’m happy with the end result, but I have to admit that my back, neck, and shoulders took a beating after pouring long hours into this one. For a closer look at the finished piece, visit this direct link: AmyGuidry.com-The Pack.

Sold

"Fragility" by Amy Guidry, acrylic on canvas, (c) Amy Guidry 2011

Lots going on as of late. I will be revealing a new painting pretty soon. My website is currently getting a makeover which will be unveiled soon, hopefully. And I’ve had shows coming down and new ones about to go up. Recently my painting “Fragility” was sold and has found a new home in NYC. This is one from my latest series of work “In Our Veins.” It’s a 6″ x 6″, acrylic on canvas. I will miss him… “Fragility” was also featured recently on Beautiful Decay along with several other paintings from the series, which you can view at http://beautifuldecay.com/2011/02/21/amy-guidry/.

Sold (New Painting)

"Untitled" by Amy Guidry; SOLD; acrylic on canvas; (c) Amy Guidry 2010

I’m posting my latest painting… I had photos taken and it sold the very next day. So I never actually had it posted on here beforehand or on my website, www.AmyGuidry.com. So here’s the first look… This is “Untitled”, a 6″x 6″ painting from my “In Our Veins” series. It’s inspired by another painting from the same series- “Untitled (Heads).” As a vegan, I’m always perplexed/frustrated/disturbed by the concept of animals being nothing more than parts- head, hoof, breast, wing, rib, rump, the list goes on. Animals are viewed as merely a means to an end. So with “Untitled (Heads)” and this newest painting, “Untitled,” I wanted to convey this concept in a Surrealist manner. As with its predecessor, this is an acrylic on canvas. All the tiny hairs, spots, and eyes of the ram, squirrel, and turkey caused me to go through several 00 round brushes.  So several trips to Michaels later, here is the finished piece!

On another note, as a reminder I am having a contest to win one of my New Realm 5″ x 5″ paintings. To enter, sign up for my newsletter at this link- AmyGuidry.com Sweepstakes. One out of the first 200 people to sign up will win!

One of my most recent works has found a new home already. My painting, “Untitled (Heads),” sold while at Wally Workman Gallery’s 30th Anniversary exhibit in Austin. The show is still up, so if you’ve missed it (or would like to go again!) there is still time to see it. The exhibit ends September 4th and gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10-5. I should also mention that two more of my recent works are also in this exhibit- “The Wild West” and “Survival of the Fittest.” So if you’re in the area, be sure to get a look at these in person since photos can never do the art justice. Homecoming

Yes, I know that titling this “Homecoming” conjures up thoughts of football and brightly colored taffeta. However, that’s not the type of homecoming I’m referring to. I’m exhibiting in the “Where Are They Now” exhibit at the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall in Slidell, Louisiana.  I was a student in the Talented Art Program during my junior high and high school days in St. Tammany Parish, so as an arts professional, I have been invited back to take part of their exhibit. The Times Picayune recently posted an article about the show, featuring one of my paintings- the direct link – www.nola.com.  (Though it was too late to correct this for the papers, my work was featured on MTV’s Real World: Hollywood, not New Orleans.)  Opening night will be this Friday- August 27th from 7-9pm.  The exhibit will remain up through September 25th at City Hall.

I also found out that the Slidell Commission on the Arts has selected my work to be featured in a solo exhibition in the 2011-2012 cultural season.  The exhibit will take place at the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall.  I’ll be sure to post more details closer to time.  More information regarding shows can be found at www.AmyGuidry.com.  You can also sign up for my newsletter on the Contact page of my site.

Wally Workman Opening

As promised, here is my second post for the day. I was recently at the Wally Workman Gallery 30th Anniversary exhibit opening. It was packed, to say the least. Luckily, there were a few moments to get some photos (you pretty much have to wait until the crowd clears and then jump in with the camera). So here are a few photos for those of you that couldn’t make it. (Though there is still ample time since the exhibit is up through September 4th.) Actually, I would recommend that anyone at the opening come back for a second look. It is very difficult to get a good view of the art when it’s that crowded. One woman told me she felt claustrophobic! All in all, great show and should not be missed.

Oh, and for more photos from the 30th Anniversary exhibit, check out Michael Barnes’s post on Austin360.com. I am featured in one of the photos from the opening- here is the direct link- www.Austin360.com. And to view more of my work, visit www.AmyGuidry.com.

I received news the other day that my work was selected for this year’s Art Melt in Baton Rouge. So looks like my new work is going to get some more exposure! The 2010 Art Melt will be held at a new venue this year- the Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge, LA. The jurors for this year’s exhibit were Andrea Pollan, the Executive Director of the Curator’s Office in Washington D.C; Denny Mecham, the Executive Director of the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi, Mississippi; and Paul Dean, Associate Professor at the LSU School of Art in Baton Rouge, LA. The exhibit will open July 16th and remain up through August 28th. There will be a preview party on July 15th from 6:30-10pm.

For more information, check out their website at www.ArtMelt.org. And for more information on my work and to view my portfolio, visit www.AmyGuidry.com.

You may recall I posted a small piece of my latest work on here. Although it’s not finished yet, I do have a good chunk done to show you. This time it’s roughly one and a half feet wide. I’m calling this piece “Survival of the Fittest.” After all the hours and days and months (!) I’ve invested in this piece, I’m starting to think this is a test of my own fitness. I’m no quitter, though, so I will be posting the finished piece soon!

This will be my latest addition to my series, “In Our Veins.” BTW, you can also read more about this series on my website since I’ve recently added an artist statement. And for those of you who are wondering, this is an acrylic on canvas, 36 inches wide by 18 inches high.

So in the meantime, enjoy these detail shots of my progress and be sure to check out the rest of this series on my website www.AmyGuidry.com.

Special Request

Someone recently asked if I ever post photos of my work in progress. Technically yes, but it’s usually just a snippet of a painting. So I dug through some photos for this “photo diary” post of sorts since I actually documented my work on “Untitled.” So here goes:
