I hope everyone is enjoying their Labor Day weekend! We’re actually having some nice weather here for a change after Tropical Storm Lee. Over the weekend, my work was featured on Empty Kingdom. This is actually the second time I’ve been featured. Some of my earlier work appeared there almost a year and a half ago (how time flies…). This feature includes work from my “In Our Veins” series including some of the newest paintings from that series. You can check it out online here: http://www.emptykingdom.com/main/featured/amy-guidry-revisit/.
NOLA Defender- "The Art of Mortality" by Kathy Rodriguez
Kathy Rodriguez wrote a great review of the “Artists Who Wish They Were Dead II” exhibit for the NOLA Defender. The show is up now through September 3rd at Barrister’s Gallery (where you can see my work) and UNO St. Claude Gallery- both on St. Claude in New Orleans. You can read the article at this direct link: http://www.noladefender.com/content/art-mortality.
My work is currently on exhibit in “Artists Who Wish They Were Dead II” at Barrister’s Gallery in New Orleans. The show was guest-curated by artist Dan Tague and is up now through September 3rd. I attended the opening reception the other night at Barrister’s which was held in conjunction with UNO St. Claude Gallery. If you would like to view my work in person, it is at Barrister’s Gallery now through September 3rd. More photos will be added soon at http://www.amyguidry.com/events.html.

I just posted some work from my childhood and teen years on my Facebook Fan Page. I thought it would be fun to share on here as well. I have been digging up older work for future projects- videos, mainly- and came across some fun pieces. Of course I then remembered some pieces that I haven’t seen and don’t actually know what became of them. As a kid, I gave away drawings, plus I think teachers ended up with some. So I have some more digging to do apparently. Here are a few of my finds (click on the photo to see the entire image):
St. Tammany Parish Fair poster- 1987. My design was picked as the poster winner for the fair that year.
16 yrs old- pastel pencil drawing of Madonna
circa 17 yrs old- charcoal drawing of Chris Cornell
circa 13/14 yrs. old- charcoal and oil pastel of Donnie Walhberg
Early high school- maybe 13/14 yrs. old- watercolor and pencil still life
Repeat performance (posted this one once already)- I was 16 at the time- pencil drawing of Ralph Lauren’s Safari; SOLD
And if you’d like to see what I’ve been up to lately, visit my website at www.AmyGuidry.com.
If you follow my Facebook page, you may know some of this news already, but I haven’t posted about it here yet. One of my paintings was used for the filming of a book-turned-movie titled “When Angels Sing.” The painting that will be featured is “Wisdom” from my “New Realm” series, which you can view here: www.AmyGuidry.com/Wisdom.html. I’m extremely honored to have my work included in this film.
“When Angels Sing” is based on the book by Turk Pipkin and is directed by Tim McCanlies. The film will star Connie Britton, Harry Connick Jr., Kris Kristofferson, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Turk Pipkin, Frankie Jonas, Chandler Canterbury, and Fionnula Flanagan. Musician appearances include Sara Hickman and the Jonas Brothers. Filming has already wrapped up and the movie is scheduled to be out this holiday season 2011.

I have a new exhibition coming up in just a couple of weeks! Some of my latest works from my “In Our Veins” series will be featured in a group exhibit at Barrister’s Gallery in New Orleans. The exhibit is titled “Artists Who Wish They Were Dead” and will be guest-curated by artist Dan Tague. I think this will prove to be an interesting show- I’m excited to see the results. The opening reception will be August 13th from 6-9pm in conjunction with the Second Saturday Artwalk held in the New Orleans St. Claude Arts District (SCAD).

Juror Kelli Scott Kelley gives a talk about Amy Guidry’s painting “Trophy”
I recently attended the Preview Party and Awards Presentation for the 2011 Art Melt at the Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge, LA. During the presentation, I was pleasantly surprised to see that as the very first award was presented, my painting “Trophy” suddenly flashed upon the screen. I received the Jurors’ Choice Award in which juror Kelli Scott Kelley gave a talk about my work. It was an honor just to be selected for the exhibition since these things can be tough to get into given the hundreds, sometimes thousands of entries juried competitions typically receive. So imagine my surprise when my work was announced for an award. And it gets better! Later on, I was called upon again for an Honorable Mention (which, again, I am honored, though I am surprised that a work can receive more than one award). All in all, it was a fun event and a great exhibit. And even if you missed the opening, the show will be up through August 28th so there is still plenty of time.
Also of note- this is the first year that Art Melt is offering an exhibition catalogue. The catalogue as well as the actual artwork are all available for purchase online at this link: https://forum35.site-ym.com/store/view_product.asp?id=811134
"Jay II" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; Private Collection; (c) Amy Guidry
And another painting from my “New Realm” series has found a new home. This piece is from my smaller, 5″ x 5″ ‘sub-series’ which are almost entirely sold out. Only a few left, which is crazy to think since there were so many to begin with. This piece is titled “Jay II” and is an acrylic on canvas from 2009. (The original “Jay” painting from the year prior sold at that time.) I exhibited this painting in an auction in which part of the sales would benefit Virtues of Acadiana, a local organization whose mission is to “instill virtues while facilitating the academic, socio-cultural, and professional development of Acadiana’s youth.”
To view more of my work, including the (remaining) available “New Realm” 5″ x 5″ paintings, visit my website at www.AmyGuidry.com.

I did an interview for Meaning-full recently and it is currently posted online! For those of you that don’t know me personally, this interview gives a little more insight into my work, my process, as well as a little more about me. And there are lots of images, so be sure to check out the second page of the post in order to read the interview. Just go to http://meaning-full.com/05/meaning-full/painting-amy-guidry/.
There’s also a link to my site from the interview, but in case you don’t know, my work can be found at www.AmyGuidry.com.
"Introspective" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 40"w x 30"h; (c) Amy Guidry 2011
Another painting from my New Realm series has a new home. I really love to share my work with people, especially people that I know. It’s a great feeling to know that something so personal to you is enjoyed by others. I remember when I first started to show my work (out of school), I was so self-conscious and afraid because it was work that I not only created on my own, with no guidance or “approval” by a professor, but also because I felt so exposed. My first show was a juried exhibit (talk about fear!). Most people there ignored me and visibly did not seem to like my painting, but I received 2nd place (obviously one person liked it) and I was so relieved and surprised, but it was enough to help spur me along. Which is how I’ve gotten where I am today.
So now “Introspective” is being enjoyed and shared with others. It’s such a good feeling- and that’s what keeps me going. It’s amazing how much we can accomplish when just one person gives us the encouragement.
