Work in progress by Amy Guidry; Acrylic on canvas; 12″ x 12″; (c) Amy Guidry 2013
I’ve made more progress on my new painting. It will be the latest addition to my In Our Veins series. The horse is now finished and the face and figure are currently underway. The size is 12″ x 12″ and it is an acrylic on canvas. I’ll be posting the finished painting here soon. Newsletter subscribers will get the first look, you can get in here: http://amyguidry.com/contact.html (click the newsletter icon).
“Segments” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4″w x 6″h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012
One of my more recent paintings from the In Our Veins series has found a new home. Segments is an acrylic on canvas and 4″h x 6″h. It features a fractured horse representing the common view of animals as merely a means to an end, while using facial expression and positioning to emphasize the importance of animals. View more from the series online here: http://www.amyguidry.com/wild_west.html.
“Transient” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6″w x 4″h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012
“Segments” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4″w x 6″h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012
I’ve recently added two new paintings to my In Our Veins series. Transient is an acrylic on canvas, 6″ wide by 4″ high, and Segments is an acrylic on canvas, 4″ wide by 6″ high. Both paintings tackle our vision of animals as just pieces and parts (ex. head, rump, wing, tongue, breast, etc.). In Transient, the butterflies exiting the body represent the life that ends when animals are hunted as trophies. At the same time, the butterflies represent the metamorphosis of one life energy into another. Segments features a fractured horse while focusing on facial expression and positioning to emphasize the importance of animals. View closeups of Transient and Segments online here www.amyguidry.com/transient.html and here www.amyguidry.com/segments.html, respectively.
“Fragmented” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 8″w x 6″h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012
It’s business as usual for me today, though I have to admit that I’ve got the weather channel on in the background as I wait for Isaac. So while we still have power, I wanted to post my latest painting- Fragmented, acrylic on canvas, 8″w x 6″h. The initial image for this actually came to mind while I was starting to fall asleep. The common notion that animals are a means to an end and nothing more than “parts,” I felt that the horse faces and hooves illustrated this concept while at the same time focusing on their importance. Despite the relatively small size, I really honed in on the details in the horse faces and eyes, making them as expressive as possible. This summer has been incredibly busy to say the least. I’ve had to miss out on openings for shows because I’m already at the opening for another. I suppose these are the moments I could use a stunt double… At least I can vicariously enjoy the Wally Workman Gallery opening for 100 Degrees thanks to the photos. The exhibit is up now through September 1st and features new work by several of the gallery’s artists. One of which being mine… you may recognize this painting from an earlier post. You can also view it here: www.amyguidry.com/succession.html.

“Succession” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6″w x 12″h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012
I’ve just finished another painting in the In Our Veins series while simultaneously working on my painting One for The Great West Coast Migration exhibit. This painting is titled Succession and is 6″ wide by 12″ high, acrylic on canvas. It just arrived at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX the other day and will be included in their upcoming show, 100 Degrees, starting August 4th through September 1st. When working on this piece, I was thinking of orders- biological orders, our need for order, hierarchy. The human skull at the bottom leads up to larger animals and butterflies, illustrating how new life grows and is sustained by dead organisms. The horse and the rose at the top- though I took artistic liberty with the rose- utilize their placement and size to emphasize their importance. While humans may be the more dominant species, I wanted to focus on the significance and the role of other species in nature.
View the painting online here: www.amyguidry.com/succession.html. You can also see it in person at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX during the 100 Degrees Preview Party on August 2nd from 6-8pm and during the opening reception August 4th from 6-8pm.
"Stallions" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6" x 6"; (c) Amy Guidry 2012
I’ve recently added a new painting to my In Our Veins series. The title is Stallions and it is a 6″ x 6,” acrylic on canvas. There are several paintings in this series which feature animals, but as heads without bodies, for example. Because the series pertains to our complex and intricate life cycle, this must also address the issue of animal welfare, as one cannot exist without the other (i.e. humans and the natural world). Many people view animals as a means to an end, therefore they are viewed as pieces and parts- head, rump, tongue, breast, wing, leg- not whole, sentient beings. I illustrate this concept while at the same time endowing each animal with emotion and personality, emphasizing qualities that we often deem as only “human.” Given that horses are such intelligent and majestic animals, I couldn’t think of a better subject. You can view a larger image of the painting on my website at this direct link: www.amyguidry.com/stallions.html.
"Untitled" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4" x 4"; (c) Amy Guidry 2011; SOLD
The latest painting from my In Our Veins series has just sold. I just finished it a matter of weeks ago, so I feel like it’s still hot off the easel. I love working with small paintings given that I use such tiny brushes. Sometimes it can seem a bit daunting to finish a large painting when it consists of meticulous dabs of paint. That said, these small sizes are great for me and great for new collectors (or those with lots of art and not enough space!). Untitled was the last of my 4″ x 4″ paintings, but I will be creating more at this size. I will be posting them here, but I give my newsletter subscribers the first viewing, so if you would like first dibs, be sure to sign up here: www.amyguidry.com/contact.html.
