“Vessel” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4″ x 4″; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

Another painting from my In Our Veins series has found a new home.  This piece is titled Vessel and is an acrylic on canvas, 4″ x 4.”  It will soon join one of my other paintings from the same series.  I like working on these small paintings- they work well individually and as well as in a group.  Some people have asked how or even why I work so small- even my larger pieces have a lot of little details.  I never thought much of it- I like to work on detail, simple as that.  It’s fun for me to work on one square inch at a time and then step back and see how it works in the grand scheme of things.  Within those square inches, I’m adding little dabs of paint, which when viewed at such a close range, is really abstract.  It’s my foray into the abstract world.  You can view the series online here: www.amyguidry.com/wild_west.html.

New Work

I’ve recently added two new paintings to my In Our Veins series.  Transient is an acrylic on canvas, 6″ wide by 4″ high, and Segments is an acrylic on canvas, 4″ wide by 6″ high.  Both paintings tackle our vision of animals as just pieces and parts (ex. head, rump, wing, tongue, breast, etc.).  In Transient, the butterflies exiting the body represent the life that ends when animals are hunted as trophies.  At the same time, the butterflies represent the metamorphosis of one life energy into another.  Segments features a fractured horse while focusing on facial expression and positioning to emphasize the importance of animals.  View closeups of Transient and Segments online here www.amyguidry.com/transient.html and here www.amyguidry.com/segments.html, respectively.

Cohabit

“Cohabit” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6″w x 12’h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve recently finished another painting in my In Our Veins series.  Cohabit is an acrylic on canvas, 6″ wide by 12″ high.  In keeping with the series, there are various animals and insects, some being just heads or a bust, as well as those that are alive and some that are not, representing the stages of the life cycle.  The cutaway view of the tunnel serves two purposes.  One, it illustrates how various species often share dwellings such as tunnels (which is why destroying animal habitats has such a huge impact on the ecosystem).  And secondly, it is a reminder that organisms underground- both living and not- affect everything living above ground.

Opening Night: Louisiana Voices

I still can’t get over the amazing turnout at the Hilliard Museum the other night.  The opening reception for Louisiana Voices: Six Artists Speak to Us was this past Friday.  The exhibit looks great and I will be going back just to finish looking at everything.  It was so busy and packed that I did not get to check out all the art.  I do have photos to share of the event opening and will be posting more to my website soon.  The exhibit is up now through December 8th at the Paul & Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum in Lafayette, LA.  Also of note: an exhibition panel discussion will be held on September 29th from 2-4pm.

Fragmented

“Fragmented” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 8″w x 6″h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

It’s business as usual for me today, though I have to admit that I’ve got the weather channel on in the background as I wait for Isaac.  So while we still have power, I wanted to post my latest painting- Fragmented, acrylic on canvas, 8″w x 6″h.  The initial image for this actually came to mind while I was starting to fall asleep.  The common notion that animals are a means to an end and nothing more than “parts,” I felt that the horse faces and hooves illustrated this concept while at the same time focusing on their importance.  Despite the relatively small size, I really honed in on the details in the horse faces and eyes, making them as expressive as possible.  View a larger image here: http://www.amyguidry.com/fragmented.html.

Louisiana Voices

"The Wild West" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 24"w x 30"h; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

You may recall awhile back my mention of this upcoming exhibition.  It has been scheduled for close to a year and now the opening is right around the corner!  Louisiana Voices: Six Artists Speak to Us will be held at the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum in Lafayette, LA as part of the Louisiana Bicentennial.  A couple of artists have been added since that early post so the featured artists are Melissa Bonin, Linda Trappey Dautreuil, Troy Dugas, Amy Guidry, Lisa Osborn, and Marjorie Pierson.  The exhibition will open September 15th with a reception the night before on September 14th from 6-8pm.

The exhibition will remain up through December 8th, so there will be plenty of opportunity to see the exhibit even if you miss the opening reception.  I should mention there will also be an exhibition panel discussion on September 29th at 2pm.  For more information about the exhibit visit: http://museum.louisiana.edu/exhibitions.

100 Degrees

This summer has been incredibly busy to say the least.  I’ve had to miss out on openings for shows because I’m already at the opening for another.  I suppose these are the moments I could use a stunt double…  At least I can vicariously enjoy the Wally Workman Gallery opening for 100 Degrees thanks to the photos.  The exhibit is up now through September 1st and features new work by several of the gallery’s artists.  One of which being mine… you may recognize this painting from an earlier post.  You can also view it here: www.amyguidry.com/succession.html.

Vessel

“Vessel” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4″ x 4″; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve just added a new painting to the In Our Veins series titled Vessel, and it is 4″ x 4,” acrylic on canvas, $100.  It was created from a sketch I did three years ago (!) and just wasn’t able to incorporate it at the time.  I was reminded of it when going through my sketchbooks the other day and found that it was perfect for this series.  The moth, which I took artistic liberty with, represents life.  It can be viewed as life either leaving the body or entering it, that is entirely up to the viewer.  No matter how it is viewed, life is part of us for a certain period of time.  It transitions from one living organism to the next.  The body contains life- it is a vessel.  To view a larger image, go to: www.amyguidry.com/vessel.html.

Another painting from the In Our Veins series has found a new home.  Untitled (Desert) is an acrylic on canvas, 4″ x 4,” and will be joining a couple of my other paintings.  It is actually a spin-off from one of my larger paintings, Heads II which can be seen here: www.amyguidry.com/Heads_II.html (and FYI Heads II is one of the paintings included in the upcoming show I’m doing at the Hilliard Museum in Lafayette, LA this September).  View a larger image of Untitled (Desert) here: www.amyguidry.com/untitled04.html.

Beautiful Crime

The UK contemporary art news site Beautiful Crime recently did a Spotlight feature on my latest body of work, In Our Veins.  Editor Ruthie Holloway said of my work, “Balancing on the edge of both photorealism and pop surrealism, American artist, Amy Guidry paints nature with an intricate hand and an inventive mind. Drawing on various influential subject matter as varied as dreams and C.S. Lewis novel characters, Guidry’s world of strange, human-like and captivating characters of animals lends the viewer an unusual insight in to her surrealist yet photorealist painted world – check out the skeletal characters contrasted with the intricately painted rock formations as testament.”  Many paintings from the series are featured which you can read about here: http://beautifulcrime.com/contemporary-art/spotlight-surrealist-painter-amy-guidry.
