New Work

Two new paintings have been recently added to my In Our Veins series.  One you may recall I posted a progress shot of not too long ago and is now finally finished.  Systems is an acrylic on canvas, 6″ x 6″ and Unity is also an acrylic on canvas, 4″w x 6″h.  Systems was originally started in February of 2010 and as I stated earlier, it was one of those moments that I needed to step back from it for awhile.  I am particularly fascinated by the commonalities found in nature.  In Systems my focus was on the similarities between ant colonies and the human body, the intestines replaced by tunnels of ants as both serve as transports for nourishment among their other functions.  While Unity focuses on the connections between all life with butterflies representing life itself- beautiful, fragile, and here for a short time.  Both paintings can be found online here: http://www.amyguidry.com/systems.html and here: http://www.amyguidry.com/unity.html.

New Work

I’ve just added two new paintings to my In Our Veins series.  The first is Synthesis, an acrylic on canvas, 4″ x 4.”  The next painting is Division, also an acrylic on canvas, 4″ x 4.”  Synthesis has just sold and currently on its way to its new home but Division is currently available.  I have more new paintings to feature as well, including the piece I posted in progress earlier in the month, so be on the lookout.  In the meantime, I have the current new work posted on my Facebook Fan Page which you can view here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Amy-Guidry/51953219932?sk=photos_stream.

In Progress

Progress shot of “Systems” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6″ x 6″; 2010-2012; (c) Amy Guidry

I’ve sometimes been asked if I ever work on a painting and decide I don’t like it.  Usually if something is not working out, I’ll find a way to fix it.  Well, I thought I’d share a piece that I almost gave up on until now.  I started this piece- get this- in February of 2010.  It’s been over 2 years and I’m just now touching this one again.  At the time, I found it a bit overwhelming working on the skeletons at such a small size, since this is a 6″ by 6″ canvas.  In addition, I just wasn’t happy with the background and kept changing my mind.  So I put it away.  There were a few times when I thought about just throwing it out and I even started to do a larger version, but that wasn’t right.  The size of canvas I choose is based on the amount of visual information I need to get across.  There is such a thing as too big.  So after some time away, I decided to tackle it one last time.  The photo that you see here is actually where I left off before deciding to work on it again.  I’ll be posting the finished piece soon, so be on the lookout.

New Work

I’ve recently added two new paintings to my In Our Veins series.  Transient is an acrylic on canvas, 6″ wide by 4″ high, and Segments is an acrylic on canvas, 4″ wide by 6″ high.  Both paintings tackle our vision of animals as just pieces and parts (ex. head, rump, wing, tongue, breast, etc.).  In Transient, the butterflies exiting the body represent the life that ends when animals are hunted as trophies.  At the same time, the butterflies represent the metamorphosis of one life energy into another.  Segments features a fractured horse while focusing on facial expression and positioning to emphasize the importance of animals.  View closeups of Transient and Segments online here www.amyguidry.com/transient.html and here www.amyguidry.com/segments.html, respectively.

Cohabit

“Cohabit” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6″w x 12’h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve recently finished another painting in my In Our Veins series.  Cohabit is an acrylic on canvas, 6″ wide by 12″ high.  In keeping with the series, there are various animals and insects, some being just heads or a bust, as well as those that are alive and some that are not, representing the stages of the life cycle.  The cutaway view of the tunnel serves two purposes.  One, it illustrates how various species often share dwellings such as tunnels (which is why destroying animal habitats has such a huge impact on the ecosystem).  And secondly, it is a reminder that organisms underground- both living and not- affect everything living above ground.

Fragmented

“Fragmented” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 8″w x 6″h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

It’s business as usual for me today, though I have to admit that I’ve got the weather channel on in the background as I wait for Isaac.  So while we still have power, I wanted to post my latest painting- Fragmented, acrylic on canvas, 8″w x 6″h.  The initial image for this actually came to mind while I was starting to fall asleep.  The common notion that animals are a means to an end and nothing more than “parts,” I felt that the horse faces and hooves illustrated this concept while at the same time focusing on their importance.  Despite the relatively small size, I really honed in on the details in the horse faces and eyes, making them as expressive as possible.  View a larger image here: http://www.amyguidry.com/fragmented.html.

Vessel

“Vessel” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4″ x 4″; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve just added a new painting to the In Our Veins series titled Vessel, and it is 4″ x 4,” acrylic on canvas, $100.  It was created from a sketch I did three years ago (!) and just wasn’t able to incorporate it at the time.  I was reminded of it when going through my sketchbooks the other day and found that it was perfect for this series.  The moth, which I took artistic liberty with, represents life.  It can be viewed as life either leaving the body or entering it, that is entirely up to the viewer.  No matter how it is viewed, life is part of us for a certain period of time.  It transitions from one living organism to the next.  The body contains life- it is a vessel.  To view a larger image, go to: www.amyguidry.com/vessel.html.

Muse Musings

I get so many questions about my work ranging from simple to philosophical, so today I thought I’d post about one of the more fun ones.  Sort of a Where’s Waldo post.  So some of you have asked about the models I’ve used in my paintings, which have always been varied from series to series.  However, there is one model that has been used for almost every body of work.  If you’ve been following my work since the early days, you probably know the answer to this.  Aside from using my own face, the next cheap and readily available model I know is my husband.  Depending on the painting, some are an exact resemblance, some take artistic license, and some don’t even feature his face (i.e. Everything’s Coming Up Roses).  So here are some of the paintings he has appeared in some form or another:

Succession

“Succession” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6″w x 12″h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve just finished another painting in the In Our Veins series while simultaneously working on my painting One for The Great West Coast Migration exhibit.  This painting is titled Succession and is 6″ wide by 12″ high, acrylic on canvas.  It just arrived at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX the other day and will be included in their upcoming show, 100 Degrees, starting August 4th through September 1st.  When working on this piece, I was thinking of orders- biological orders, our need for order, hierarchy.  The human skull at the bottom leads up to larger animals and butterflies, illustrating how new life grows and is sustained by dead organisms.  The horse and the rose at the top- though I took artistic liberty with the rose- utilize their placement and size to emphasize their importance.  While humans may be the more dominant species, I wanted to focus on the significance and the role of other species in nature.

View the painting online here: www.amyguidry.com/succession.html.  You can also see it in person at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX during the 100 Degrees Preview Party on August 2nd from 6-8pm and during the opening reception August 4th from 6-8pm.
