Also of note- if you would like to see my work in person, I’ll be showing in the Main Gallery of the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette, LA as part of a 10-person exhibition called “Apocalypse Now.” The opening is this Saturday, October 10th from 6-9pm. The exhibit will remain up through January 9th.

I’ve recently finished some new work in my In Our Veins series. Dissociate is an acrylic on canvas, 12″ wide by 6″ high. Lately I’ve been exploring the “opposite” of many paintings in this series. Whereas in previous paintings, I relied on eyes and facial expressions to convey a sense of connection, these recent works show animals without faces or covered faces. Anonymity vs. connection- without seeing their faces, does that make them any less personable? Meaningful? And how does this apply on a global scale? These are some of the questions I’m working on with these and future paintings.

Pathway, the coaster that I painted for La Luz de Jesus Gallery’s Coaster Show recently sold. Pathway is an acrylic on cardstock, 4″ tondo. I like to paint. There was a time when I was scared to paint, thinking I wouldn’t be any good at it. I was used to drawing and liked the precision and control I had with it. Paint seemed messy and unforgiving. I can’t pinpoint exactly when I began to like painting. I think gradually I just learned to be less critical of my results thus allowing me more opportunity to work with paint. I like the tactile process of painting. I like filling in each square inch of a canvas, transforming it from a white blank space into a story. I like the toothy texture of the canvas. I like the look of the paint as it spreads across and fills in each crevice. I like the challenge of it even though it can be daunting. I just really like to paint.
