“Vessel” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4″ x 4″; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

Another painting from my In Our Veins series has found a new home.  This piece is titled Vessel and is an acrylic on canvas, 4″ x 4.”  It will soon join one of my other paintings from the same series.  I like working on these small paintings- they work well individually and as well as in a group.  Some people have asked how or even why I work so small- even my larger pieces have a lot of little details.  I never thought much of it- I like to work on detail, simple as that.  It’s fun for me to work on one square inch at a time and then step back and see how it works in the grand scheme of things.  Within those square inches, I’m adding little dabs of paint, which when viewed at such a close range, is really abstract.  It’s my foray into the abstract world.  You can view the series online here: www.amyguidry.com/wild_west.html.

"Perspective" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4" x 4"; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

My painting Perspective has found a new home.  Perspective is another painting from my In Our Veins series and is a 4″ x 4″ acrylic on canvas.  These tiny hare heads required some tiny brushes with barely there bristles.  I always like a challenge, though- it keeps me on my toes.  If you’ve been following my work, you may have come to that conclusion…  So if you are new, this series deals with the connections between all life forms and our role in the life cycle.  I feel that environmental issues as well as animal welfare are a large part of that discussion as they go hand-in-hand.  With this in mind, many of the animals in In Our Veins are depicted as just heads or limbs, such as the hares in Perspective.  While thinking of animals as simply parts and a means to an end is a common view, I see them as sentient beings and a significant part of the world we live in.  While I depict them as ‘missing pieces,’ I focus on the expressiveness of their eyes and faces to relay their importance.  You can learn more about the series as well as view the paintings at this direct link: www.amyguidry.com/wild_west.html.

Also of note: if you are in the Lafayette area or planning a visit, you can see works from my In Our Veins series in person at the Paul & Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum starting September 15th through December 8th.

Fragmented

“Fragmented” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 8″w x 6″h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

It’s business as usual for me today, though I have to admit that I’ve got the weather channel on in the background as I wait for Isaac.  So while we still have power, I wanted to post my latest painting- Fragmented, acrylic on canvas, 8″w x 6″h.  The initial image for this actually came to mind while I was starting to fall asleep.  The common notion that animals are a means to an end and nothing more than “parts,” I felt that the horse faces and hooves illustrated this concept while at the same time focusing on their importance.  Despite the relatively small size, I really honed in on the details in the horse faces and eyes, making them as expressive as possible.  View a larger image here: http://www.amyguidry.com/fragmented.html.

"Symbiotic" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 11"w x 14"h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

Another painting from my In Our Veins series will have a new home.  Symbiotic is an acrylic on canvas, 11″w x 14″h.  There is a good bit of history to this piece- for starters, it comes from one of the original sketches I did in the early stages of the series.  Because I do these sketches while I am currently working on other paintings, it can be quite some time before they come to fruition.  Needless to say, I have lived with the concept for Symbiotic for awhile.  Also, it was this year’s Best of Show winner in the Surreal Salon held at the Baton Rouge Gallery Center for Contemporary Art.  As a result of my win, it was featured in ads in both Juxtapoz and Hi-Fructose magazine.  I’m happy that it will be in good hands and joining a fantastic collection of work.

"Spring" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 5" x 5"; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2009

I just realized that I’ve been slacking a bit and did exactly what I would tell other artists not to do.  I forgot to get photos of a few paintings.  They were in an exhibit almost immediately after being finished, hence the mistake.  Though I’ve had plenty of time since then to rectify it….  One is now sold, which at least if I need a photo of it I can get one from the buyer, but that is not always the case, therefore it’s important to always document.  The good news is I do have a photo of the other painting that sold- Spring.  Both paintings are acrylic on canvas, 5″ x 5″ each, and from my New Realm series, which you can see the larger paintings in the series here: www.amyguidry.com/beginning.html.

One

“One” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6″x 6″; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

Finally finished!  I’ve just completed my painting for The Great West Coast Migration traveling exhibition.  The title is One and it is an acrylic on canvas, 6″ x 6.”  The exhibition is organized by PangeaSeed and will benefit sharks and oceans in Japan and abroad.  Given that so many sharks are killed for their fins (a delicacy in Japan and China), this cause was of particular interest to me not only as an artist but as a vegan as well.  People often think of sharks as vicious predators, (thanks, Media!) when in fact, they do not seek out humans and only a small percentage of shark attacks occur each year.  I wanted to focus on them as being part of this world and just as significant as the rest of us.  I combined the human faces with the shark body to illustrate them as one, or equals.  The shark body floats in the air, in keeping with many of my other paintings, but also mimicking the hunted, hanging sharks I so often see.  Such a simple title- One– and such a simple concept, yet we still struggle to see our planet as something to share rather than dominate.

The exhibition will begin this summer at the following galleries:

Seattle – Roq la Rue Gallery- July 13-15
Portland – Grass Hut Co.- July 20-22
San Francisco – Spoke Art Gallery- July 27-28
Los Angeles – LeBasse Project- August 2-4
Costa Mesa – The Artery- August 10-12
San Diego – Space 4 Art- August 17-19

15th International Open

I’m just now getting around to posting photos from the opening reception of the 15th International Open.  My painting Fleeting was selected for the exhibit at Woman Made Gallery by guest juror Linda Warren of Linda Warren Gallery, also in Chicago.  Here are a few of the photos from opening night- more are on my website at www.amyguidry.com/events.html.  The good news is there is still time to see it since the show is up now through April 26th.

Three paintings from my In Our Veins series have recently found a new home in Norway!  Interconnected, Full Circle, and Ephemeral are all acrylic on canvas, 6″ x 6,” 4″ x 4,” and 4″ x 4,” respectively.  I’m happy to have my work go abroad and to such a wonderful, thoughtful new owner as well.  It means so much to me to have someone show such appreciation for my work and to know that it speaks to them in such a personal manner.  No award could ever compare.

To view a larger image of each painting, visit my website at this direct link: www.amyguidry.com/interconnected.html (don’t forget to watch the 30-second video of the making of Interconnected from start to finish- the button is located below the painting).  For Ephemeral view here: www.amyguidry.com/ephemeral.html and for Full Circle, view here: www.amyguidry.com/full-circle.html.

Two more paintings from my New Realm series have recently found new homes.  Both Mushrooms and Snail are acrylic on canvas, 5″ x 5″ paintings from the New Realm 5 x 5 series.  The 5 x 5’s spotlighted different characters and elements from the larger paintings in the series.  Both paintings were sold at the Masur Museum of Art’s Off the Wall fundraiser in which part of the proceeds benefit the museum.  To view more paintings from the entire series, go to this direct link: www.amyguidry.com/beginning.html.
