Perspective

"Perspective" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4" x 4"; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve just added another new painting to my In Our Veins series.  It is a 4″ x 4″ painting, acrylic on canvas, $100, titled Perspective.  This is yet another example of why I use such tiny paintbrushes.  The hare heads are about the size of a dime.  The heads are representative of the typical view of animals- that they are simply a means to an end and are just parts and pieces we use or eat as opposed to sentient beings.  I, however, don’t see them this way- hence the title Perspective– which is why I depict them in a manner that emphasizes the expressions of their faces or light colored, “human-looking” eyes.

Next Up: New Orleans

"Wolfpack" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 12" x 12"; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

It’s been an insanely busy week, hence my lack of posting sooner.  The good news is I will be revealing a new painting I’ve been slaving over for quite some time, so be on the lookout for it.  I also have an upcoming show which is just a couple of weeks away.  I will be in a 3-person exhibit at Barrister’s Gallery in New Orleans next month with Nikki Crook and Monique Ligons.  I’ll be showing works from my In Our Veins series, my most recent body of work.  This should be a really fun show and opening night will also be held in conjunction with the SCAD Artwalk, May 12th from 6-9pm.  For those of you that would like to get a sneak preview, you can check it out here: www.barristersgallery.com/upcoming.html.

Catapult

Catapult magazine- Issue 8, March 2012

I just discovered that the latest issue of Catapult magazine is out and it features several of my paintings from the In Our Veins series.  My work was recently selected for publication (the competition for this thing is fierce, by the way).  I have a two-page spread on pages 26 and 27 of the current issue, Issue 8, March 2012.  You can now view it online as well and check out the entire issue at this direct link: http://catapult-mag.com/

New Painting!

"Stallions" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6" x 6"; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve recently added a new painting to my In Our Veins series.  The title is Stallions and it is a 6″ x 6,” acrylic on canvas.  There are several paintings in this series which feature animals, but as heads without bodies, for example.  Because the series pertains to our complex and intricate life cycle, this must also address the issue of animal welfare, as one cannot exist without the other (i.e. humans and the natural world).  Many people view animals as a means to an end, therefore they are viewed as pieces and parts- head, rump, tongue, breast, wing, leg- not whole, sentient beings.  I illustrate this concept while at the same time endowing each animal with emotion and personality, emphasizing qualities that we often deem as only “human.”  Given that horses are such intelligent and majestic animals, I couldn’t think of a better subject.  You can view a larger image of the painting on my website at this direct link: www.amyguidry.com/stallions.html.

New Paintings

I’ve recently added two new paintings to my In Our Veins series.  The first is The Ties That Bind, an acrylic on canvas, 6″ wide by 12″ high and is available through Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX.  Next is a new small painting, Full Circle, also acrylic on canvas, and is 4″ x 4″ square.  Both paintings deal with the life cycle and how everything eventually becomes part of the earth, continuously nourishing and fostering new life.  We often forget that everything has a role in nature, which The Ties That Bind serves as a reminder of this.  Every species is connected and to remove one creates a domino effect leading back to us.  Get a better view of each painting here www.amyguidry.com/ties_that_bind.html and www.amyguidry.com/full-circle.html.

OK Great

OK Great feature: Amy Guidry

I am happy to share with you that my work is currently featured on OK Great.  Two paintings from the In Our Veins series are included- The Wild West and Untitled (Heads).  Brendan Ward said of my work, “Such beautifully demented paintings from Amy Guidry. I’ve been watching a lot of Breaking Bad lately, and maybe it’s just the desert landscapes prevalent in her work, but I can’t help but associate Amy’s series “Wild West” with the show. Twisted, but oddly familiar.”  Check it out as well as the array of great art and design on there at this link: www.okaygreat.com/2012/01/amy-guidry/

Wolfpack

"Wolfpack" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 12" x 12"; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve just finished my first painting of the New Year!  This is another new addition to the In Our Veins series titled Wolfpack.  It is an acrylic on canvas, 12″ by 12″ square.  I went through, on average, one paintbrush per wolf head on this one.  I build up the colors in each layer and then start adding layers of hairs, working my way up to the lighter hairs, therefore my paintbrush takes a beating.  Well worth it, though, since I am pleased with the outcome.  This is a “sister piece” to my painting The Pack (which is one of the paintings I will have featured in the Surreal Salon at the Baton Rouge Gallery- Center for Contemporary Art!).  You can check out both paintings on my website and for a better view of Wolfpack, visit www.amyguidry.com/wolfpack.html.

New Small Works

I’ve added two new small works to the In Our Veins series.  Both are acrylic on canvas, 4″ by 4,” and $100 each.  I just had better photos taken of them, hence the late post.  The first painting is titled “Interdependent” and the next one is “Untitled (Desert).” I use tiny paintbrushes on all my work, but they are especially useful for these small paintings as they consist mostly of tiny little dabs and lines of paint.  The photos here are rather small, so you can view them full-size on my website at www.amyguidry.com/interdependent.html and www.amyguidry.com/untitled04.html.

New Small Paintings

I recently added two new small paintings to the In Our Veins series.  My latest newsletter featured both paintings (which if you would like to receive, sign up information is here: www.amyguidry.com/contact.html) and there is still one available.  The titles are Generate and Ephemeral, each are 4″ x 4,” acrylic on canvas.  Generate (sold) pertains to the life cycle and how life continues, hence the flowers growing out of the wolf’s back.  Ephemeral is still available ($100- contact me if interested) and features a moth with a heart, ribcage, and vertebrae superimposed upon it.  The premise of the painting is the importance of life- so fragile, precious, and short, in the scheme of things- and serves as a reminder to live life to the fullest.  Both paintings can be viewed (larger) on my website at www.amyguidry.com/ephemeral.html.
