Hyperreality

The opening reception for my solo exhibition, Hyperreality, was held the other night at the Slidell Cultural Center in Slidell, Louisiana.  I was delighted to see so many people come out for the event, especially given the cold, dreary weather.  I’ve posted a few photos from the opening for those that missed it.  There are many more on my website, though, so to view the Slidell Cultural Center slideshow, go to: www.amyguidry.com/events.html.  The exhibition will be up through March 30th at the Slidell Cultural Center, located in City Hall.

"Interdependent" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4" x 4"; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

One of my more recent paintings has found a new home in time for Valentine’s Day.  Interdependent is one of the small works from my In Our Veins series and is an acrylic on canvas, 4″ x 4″ square.  This series deals with the life cycle and the impact that each species has on one another, which is represented in Interdependent.  The roots of the tree have a vaguely similar texture and color as the deer antlers, so I took liberty in morphing them together to illustrate the connection of all life forms.  The butterflies, as seen in several paintings in this series, are a metaphor for life and our mortality.  They are beautiful, delicate, and fragile, and here for a short time, reminding us that life is precious.

New Paintings

I’ve recently added two new paintings to my In Our Veins series.  The first is The Ties That Bind, an acrylic on canvas, 6″ wide by 12″ high and is available through Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX.  Next is a new small painting, Full Circle, also acrylic on canvas, and is 4″ x 4″ square.  Both paintings deal with the life cycle and how everything eventually becomes part of the earth, continuously nourishing and fostering new life.  We often forget that everything has a role in nature, which The Ties That Bind serves as a reminder of this.  Every species is connected and to remove one creates a domino effect leading back to us.  Get a better view of each painting here www.amyguidry.com/ties_that_bind.html and www.amyguidry.com/full-circle.html.

A few of my favorite things

There are a lot of great artists in the world, many of which are living, and it seems that I meet a new one everyday.  I’ve come across some new artists (or at least new to me) as of late and thought it would be fun to introduce them to everyone on here.  I’ve compiled a list- some of which are not as unfamiliar to me but thought they should get their due- so here are their links to their work (in no particular order):

Interviews

There are currently three sites posting my work, two of which include new interviews. First, as mentioned in an older post, my work was selected for inclusion on the beinArt Surreal Art Collective site. If you are unfamiliar with the site, it is an online collection of surrealist works by renowned artists (many are my personal heroes) such as Ron English, Laurie Lipton, and Kris Kuksi. I’m really excited and honored to have my work included among such great artists. Check out my profile at beinArt.org-Artists-Amy Guidry.

Two recent interviews are posted online as well. First, I had an interview with Guy Sangster Adams of the U.K.’s “Plectrum- The Cultural Pick.” It’s a great interview and Mr. Adams had some wonderful comments about my work so check it out at Plectrum-Exhibition/New Work Preview and Interview:Amy Guidry.

The second interview was with Silvia Moreno-Garcia of the Canadian zine, Innsmouth Free Press. Another round of interesting questions, which you can check out on their site at Innsmouth Free Press- Interview:Amy Guidry.

Studio Visit- Popular Topic These Days

I’ve had a lot of interest in Studio Visit Magazine as of late. Hopefully most of you have found your answers in some of my recent posts. So low and behold, I received an acceptance letter (and email!) from Studio Visit Magazine. My work was selected for inclusion in the Summer 2010 edition. So this will be Volume…10? Not sure, but I think there’s a Winter edition about to come out…then the Summer edition. The juror for this volume was Dina Deitsch, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, deCordova Sculpture Park + Museum in Lincoln, MA. For those who don’t know, Studio Visit is published by The Open Studios Press and is the sister publication to New American Paintings. It is a nationally conducted juried competition featuring 2D and 3D work. Oh, and in case you haven’t seen it- the painting that will be in the magazine is “The Wild West” which I’ve included a small image of here. There’s a closeup of it on my website www.AmyGuidry.com

Here’s the Latest

"Vulnerable" by Amy Guidry; (c) Amy Guidry 2010
"Vulnerable" by Amy Guidry; (c) Amy Guidry 2010

I have recently finished another addition to my new series of work. This painting is titled “Vulnerable” and will be featured in my group exhibition, 6@549,  at Gallery 549 in Lafayette, LA next month. It’s an acrylic on canvas, 24″ x 12.” I included a hare in the last painting from this series but this time he is a main character. The concept of vulnerability is interesting to me since as humans, we assume that we are invincible- be it physically or emotionally. Obviously this isn’t true, and sometimes it’s the things that we least expect that harm us.

"Complacent" by Amy Guidry
"Complacent" by Amy Guidry

Upon the start of the Surreal Salon exhibit at the Baton Rouge Gallery Center for Contemporary Art, my painting “Complacent” has sold. The exhibit will be up through the 28th of January, so if you haven’t seen this piece in person, now is your last chance. It’s fairly large- 48″ across by 24″ high, so there’s a lot that can’t be captured in a jpeg on the internet. This painting was an image that came to me, but I sketched it out and waited to use it later when the time was right. It fit perfectly with the social commentary series I was working on at that time.

Also of note, Robin Miller’s recent article in The Advocate (the Baton Rouge, LA newspaper) about the Surreal Salon. My painting was also featured with the article, so I was happy to find that out as well. You can read it under the Press Section of my website at http://www.amyguidry.com/press.html.
