One of the most popular questions I get is how I come up with ideas for my next painting or my next series. I’m always coming up with ideas and sometimes they may not pertain to my current body of work, although sometimes they do, but either way, I catalog all these ideas, thoughts, and notes in my sketchbooks. I keep a small sketchbook- well, it’s actually a diary, hence the lined pages- on my nightstand. At night when I’m going through my mental checklist of stuff to do- the neverending list- I try to clear my head of all this stress and mental noise to come up with some of my best ideas. That’s not to say that I don’t have inspirational moments during the day, but there are lots of distractions that can inhibit or halt the creative process. Sometimes I get ideas or maybe just ‘tidbits’ from dreams, or sometimes an idea or a solution to a painting may just pop into my head once I’m rid of distractions and thinking clearly. Either way, I keep my sketchbook handy and get these ideas on paper, no matter the hour, for fear of forgetting them later. They’re not always the most legible and the thumbnail drawings are pretty messy, but it’s enough to jog my memory.

My latest painting is finally complete! I’ve been posting my progress along the way on this painting which you can see here and here. The title is Safety in Numbers and it is an acrylic on canvas, 20″wide by 10″high. It is the most recent addition to my In Our Veins series. Another painting from my In Our Veins series has recently found a new home. My painting Anthropomorphism is an acrylic on canvas, 6″ x 6,” and one of the most recent paintings from the series. It is currently on exhibit in the 1000 Words show in the Main Gallery of the Acadiana Center for the Arts, so if you haven’t had the opportunity to see it in person, there is still time. The exhibit is open now through July 13th.
The 1000 Words exhibition opened at the Acadiana Center for the Arts last Saturday night. The opening was held in conjunction with the Second Saturday Artwalk in Lafayette, Louisiana. If you missed the opening, not to worry because there will actually be other ‘openings’ during the June and July Artwalk. The exhibit is open now through July 13th.

I’ve made great strides with my latest painting. I’ve just about finished the background and will be moving on to the gazelles next. The size of the canvas is 20″ wide by 10″ high. I’ll be posting the finished painting here soon!

I’ve been diligently working on a new painting for my In Our Veins series. This is the initial sketch on canvas, consisting of basic outlines. I’ve already started applying paint and will be posting it here as soon as it is finished. I’m still trying to settle between two titles. It is 20″ wide by 10″ high. I’m currently showing on the West Coast and the East Coast, and happy to say that my next exhibit will be local (in Lafayette, Louisiana). The Acadiana Center for the Arts is presenting an exhibition of narrative art titled 1000 Words in which I have been invited to participate. The exhibit will be held in the Main Gallery starting May 11th through July 13th. The opening reception will be held on May 11th from 6-9pm, in conjunction with the Second Saturday Artwalk.
