I recently had a nice surprise- I did an interview for Country Roads magazine and my painting “Introspective” is on the cover of their October issue.  The issue’s theme is “Myths & Legends” so my New Realm series was a good fit.  “Introspective” is an acrylic on canvas, 40″w x 30″h, and even though it is sold, there are several available paintings from the same series.  New Realm, in short, challenges the antiquated views of women as often seen in fairy tales.  Using a surreal backdrop, it is a modern tale which presents the heroine as a strong and courageous woman.  To view a larger image of the cover, as well as read the interview with James Fox-Smith, go to this direct link: http://countryroadsmagazine.com/2011/october-2011-issue.

Movie Feature

"When Angels Sing" by Turk Pipkin

If you follow my Facebook page, you may know some of this news already, but I haven’t posted about it here yet.  One of my paintings was used for the filming of a book-turned-movie titled “When Angels Sing.”  The painting that will be featured is “Wisdom” from my “New Realm” series, which you can view here: www.AmyGuidry.com/Wisdom.html.  I’m extremely honored to have my work included in this film.

“When Angels Sing” is based on the book by Turk Pipkin and is directed by Tim McCanlies. The film will star Connie Britton, Harry Connick Jr., Kris Kristofferson, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Turk Pipkin, Frankie Jonas, Chandler Canterbury, and Fionnula Flanagan. Musician appearances include Sara Hickman and the Jonas Brothers. Filming has already wrapped up and the movie is scheduled to be out this holiday season 2011.

CALYX Journal- Summer Edition is Out!

CALYX Journal 26:3, featuring "Adaptation" by Amy Guidry

I had a delightful surprise arrive in the mail the other day.  My copies of the CALYX Journal featuring my work on the cover arrived!  I’m honored to be the cover artist for their 35th Anniversary- Special Expanded edition, and not only that, but my work is on the inside as well.  My painting “Adaptation” is on the cover and “Freedom” is on page 65.  Both paintings are from my “New Realm” series which is a modern and surreal spin on fairytales in which the woman is the heroine, not the victim.

The CALYX Journal is comprised of art and literature by women, including poetry, photography, paintings, short stories, essays, and reviews.  They were also the first in the U.S. to publish Frida Kahlo’s (one of my Surrealist heroes) works in color.

And another painting from my “New Realm” series has found a new home.  This piece is from my smaller, 5″ x 5″ ‘sub-series’ which are almost entirely sold out.  Only a few left, which is crazy to think since there were so many to begin with.  This piece is titled “Jay II” and is an acrylic on canvas from 2009.  (The original “Jay” painting from the year prior sold at that time.)  I exhibited this painting in an auction in which part of the sales would benefit Virtues of Acadiana, a local organization whose mission is to “instill virtues while facilitating the academic, socio-cultural, and professional development of Acadiana’s youth.”

Another painting from my New Realm series has a new home. I really love to share my work with people, especially people that I know. It’s a great feeling to know that something so personal to you is enjoyed by others. I remember when I first started to show my work (out of school), I was so self-conscious and afraid because it was work that I not only created on my own, with no guidance or “approval” by a professor, but also because I felt so exposed. My first show was a juried exhibit (talk about fear!). Most people there ignored me and visibly did not seem to like my painting, but I received 2nd place (obviously one person liked it) and I was so relieved and surprised, but it was enough to help spur me along. Which is how I’ve gotten where I am today.

So now “Introspective” is being enjoyed and shared with others. It’s such a good feeling- and that’s what keeps me going. It’s amazing how much we can accomplish when just one person gives us the encouragement.

I’ve received more good news recently- my work was selected for inclusion in the 54th Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art at the VACI (Visual Arts at Chautauqua Institution). The juror for the exhibit is Jim Kempner of the Jim Kempner Gallery in New York City. My painting “Renewal” from my New Realm series was selected and it is an acrylic on canvas, 48″ wide by 24″ high. The exhibition will take place in the Strohl Art Center of the Visual Arts at Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York. There will be an opening reception held on Sunday, June 26th from 3-5pm. The exhibit will remain on display through July 14, 2011.

Louisiana Review

The Louisiana Review, Volume 9, Spring 2011 edition

I recently received a request to publish some of my work from my “New Realm” series in the LSUE journal, The Louisiana Review. I’m excited to announce that the issue is out and features “The Red Dress” and “Dreaming.” Both of which are in private collections, but it’s nice to have an opportunity to still feature them in print. The Louisiana Review is published by the Division of Liberal Arts, Louisiana State University at Eunice. It features art, poetry, and literature predominantly from Louisiana and Southern artists. Look for my work in the Spring 2011 edition, Volume 9, available online now.

Another “New Realm” painting has found a new home! This piece is titled “The Red Dress” and is a spotlight piece, so to speak, based on a larger painting, “Dawning.” This is another 5″ x 5″ painting from my “New Realm” series. The series is my own modern interpretation of fairytales in which the woman in the story is the heroine, not the victim. The red dress seen in this painting, as well as in “Dawning,” was inspired by a fashion shoot in Vogue magazine depicting a model in a childlike pose, wearing a red babydoll dress. This imagery further perpetuates the idea of women as fragile, young, naive, in need of protection. This series is shrinking quickly thanks to the holiday season. “Butterfly,” “Ladybug,” and “Dreaming” have all sold and are from my 5″ x 5″ series which “spotlights” different characters and scenes from “New Realm.” All are acrylic on canvas.
