Another painting from my New Realm series has a new home. I really love to share my work with people, especially people that I know. It’s a great feeling to know that something so personal to you is enjoyed by others. I remember when I first started to show my work (out of school), I was so self-conscious and afraid because it was work that I not only created on my own, with no guidance or “approval” by a professor, but also because I felt so exposed. My first show was a juried exhibit (talk about fear!). Most people there ignored me and visibly did not seem to like my painting, but I received 2nd place (obviously one person liked it) and I was so relieved and surprised, but it was enough to help spur me along. Which is how I’ve gotten where I am today.

So now “Introspective” is being enjoyed and shared with others. It’s such a good feeling- and that’s what keeps me going. It’s amazing how much we can accomplish when just one person gives us the encouragement.

Two more of my paintings have recently found new homes. (They are my babies, so I do think of them as growing up and finding homes of their own.) Both are from my 2005-2006 series of portraits- “Sandhya” and “Man in the Park.” They are both acrylic on canvas, and the same dimensions as well- 26 inches wide by 22 inches high, framed. “Man in the Park” is actually now in the permanent collection of the Alexandria Museum of Art in Alexandria, Louisiana.

As you may know from an earlier post, my website will be getting a makeover (it’s just going on behind the scenes so my site is still currently up and running). And since my portfolio is always expanding and there are very few portraits still available, I’ve decided to remove the portraits from the new site. You will still be able to enjoy them online elsewhere, though- such as this blog as well as my Facebook Fan Page. I’ll be revealing the new look soon, but in the meantime you can still check out all of my work at www.AmyGuidry.com.

This weekend I will be one of the artists featured in the Throwdown.1.5 auction to benefit the Prospect New Orleans Biennial. It’s for a great cause and it’s in New Orleans, so all the more reason to go! I am honored to be included amongst such great artists, some of which are from my own area. My painting “Kerry” from my 2005/2006 series will be up for auction. It is an acrylic on canvas, framed, and total size dimensions are 16″w x 13″h (view more of my work at www.AmyGuidry.com). The event will be held at Stage 3, Secondline Stages in New Orleans this Saturday, February 5th from 8-11pm. So if you are out and about for the artwalk, stop by afterwards. I happen to have two shows going on this week, well opening that is. As you may recall, my work was selected for the MYSELF exhibition at the Sheppard Fine Art Gallery of the University of Nevada, Reno. I posted about this months ago, but the time has come and the opening will be taking place this Thursday, January 20th. The reception will take place from 5:30-8pm, with a panel discussion including some of the participating artists during the first hour. The exhibition officially opens today and will remain up through February 18th. The photo on the left is of the cover of the exhibition catalogue, which includes essays by Joy Garnett and Mira Schor.

The second opening is for the 26th Annual International Exhibition taking place at the Meadows Gallery of the University of Texas at Tyler. The opening reception is taking place this evening (!!) so if you are in the Texas area, be sure to stop by. The reception will be held from 6-7:30pm, with the exhibit remaining up through March 4th. The juror for the exhibit is renowned artist Cotter Luppi.

I have some great news to share- if you may recall, I had a solo exhibition earlier this year at the Schepis Museum in Columbia, LA. Well, my work is now in their permanent collection! I am honored that I am the first artist in the southwestern area of Louisiana to have their work included in the Louisiana Artists collection at the Schepis Museum. My painting, “Jenny,” is now in the collection and is one of my earlier works from 2005. It is an acrylic on canvas, 13″ wide by 16″ high, framed. I hadn’t mentioned this sale before on my blog, but I thought it would be a great time to do so since one of my inspirations is having an opening next month. One of my earlier series consisted of portraits and figure work, this being one of those paintings. I was (and still am) a big fan of Philip Pearlstein’s work, and thought of his nudes when painting this piece (except sans the various objects in the background, since my focus was on closeup views of the faces and figures). As it turns out, Mr. Pearlstein is having an opening November 4th at Betty Cunningham Gallery in New York. Judging by the title of the show, it will consist of all new paintings, too.

I am happy to announce that my work is now in the permanent collection of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art in Cedar Rapids, IA. My painting, “Zachary,” from my 2005 series of work is now part of the museum’s collection. The painting is 26″w x 22″h, framed, and an acrylic on canvas. Awhile back, fellow artist Buddy Nestor asked if I would like to have my portrait done for a series he’s showing at The Toothless Cat Gallery. I was thrilled to be asked, and now I can share the result with you. The series is “Every Girl Goes to Hell” and will be on display at The Toothless Cat Gallery in Philadelphia, PA starting April 3rd. Buddy has painted numerous female artists for the series, choosing them based on their own artwork. Some of those artists include Edith Lebeau, Peggy Wauters, and Katie Perdue.

In Buddy’s own words, “All of the models I use for these portraits are very beautiful. However, when I paint them, they are very ugly.” But are they ugly? I find them quite intriguing, myself. I received some exciting news in the mail the other day. My work has been selected for inclusion in the LaGrange National XXVI Biennial Exhibition at the LaGrange Art Museum. The juror for the exhibit happens to be New Orleans’ own J. Richard Gruber, Director of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. The exhibit will be held at the LaGrange Art Museum in LaGrange, GA. I’ve shown in Atlanta before, but this will be a first for me in LaGrange. So more good news- there will be a color catalog of the exhibition and there will be Purchase Awards granted. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Okay, details- the exhibit will be on display from February 26th through April 17th, 2010. Hopefully with such a long exhibition period, more of you will have the opportunity to see the work in person. It’s Not All Skeletons…

My latest work may be strange or grim or surreal, depending on whom you ask. So I thought I’d lighten things up a bit and show that I’m capable of painting a variety of things. Babies, for example. I do commissioned paintings every so often, so for this piece, I painted this delightful little boy for a collector of mine. The painting is titled “Pierce” and is 11 inches wide by 14 inches high, acrylic on canvas. The pose works great for this piece since he’s practically popping out of the canvas.
