"Introspective" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 40"w x 30"h; (c) Amy Guidry 2011

Another painting from my New Realm series has a new home. I really love to share my work with people, especially people that I know. It’s a great feeling to know that something so personal to you is enjoyed by others. I remember when I first started to show my work (out of school), I was so self-conscious and afraid because it was work that I not only created on my own, with no guidance or “approval” by a professor, but also because I felt so exposed. My first show was a juried exhibit (talk about fear!). Most people there ignored me and visibly did not seem to like my painting, but I received 2nd place (obviously one person liked it) and I was so relieved and surprised, but it was enough to help spur me along. Which is how I’ve gotten where I am today.

So now “Introspective” is being enjoyed and shared with others. It’s such a good feeling- and that’s what keeps me going. It’s amazing how much we can accomplish when just one person gives us the encouragement.

"The Red Dress" by Amy Guidry; Private Collection; (c) Amy Guidry 2011

Another “New Realm” painting has found a new home! This piece is titled “The Red Dress” and is a spotlight piece, so to speak, based on a larger painting, “Dawning.” This is another 5″ x 5″ painting from my “New Realm” series. The series is my own modern interpretation of fairytales in which the woman in the story is the heroine, not the victim. The red dress seen in this painting, as well as in “Dawning,” was inspired by a fashion shoot in Vogue magazine depicting a model in a childlike pose, wearing a red babydoll dress. This imagery further perpetuates the idea of women as fragile, young, naive, in need of protection. It’s the perfect concept to include in my series empowering women.  To view the “New Realm” series, as well as larger images, visit my website at this direct link: www.AmyGuidry.com.

I’ve had three more New Realm 5 x 5 paintings find new homes. This series is shrinking quickly thanks to the holiday season. “Butterfly,” “Ladybug,” and “Dreaming” have all sold and are from my 5″ x 5″ series which “spotlights” different characters and scenes from “New Realm.” All are acrylic on canvas. To view more of this series as well as the larger “New Realm” paintings, visit my website at this direct link: AmyGuidry.com New Realm.

“Like a Prayer”- Opening Reception

I nearly forgot to post photos for the exhibition I have going on right now… the opening reception was in November, but the exhibit is currently open through December 30th. (So there’s still time to see it even if you are stuck in a shopping mall somewhere until the 25th.) I have a few photos to share from opening night for “Like a Prayer: Reflections on the 21st C Feminine” at Barrister’s Gallery in New Orleans, LA. More photos are on my website under Events- www.AmyGuidry.com. The show was curated by Martina Batan, Director of Ronald Feldman Fine Art, New York.  There was a great crowd and in conjunction with the St. Claude Arts District (SCAD) 2nd Saturday Artwalk, the Multispecies Salon 3 was also open. Very busy night! If you missed out, you can still see “Like a Prayer” at Barrister’s, now through Dec. 30th.

Like a Prayer

"Inner Peace?" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; (c) Amy Guidry 2010
"Inner Peace?" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; (c) Amy Guidry 2010

I’m sure you’re thinking that’s an interesting title… It’s actually the name of an upcoming show I will be in next week. “Like a Prayer: Reflections of the 21st C Feminine” is a group exhibition that will open November 13th at Barrister’s Gallery in New Orleans. The show was curated by Martina Batan, the director of Ronald Feldman Fine Art in New York. I’m excited to be in this show due to the lineup of artists as well as this being my first exhibit at Barrister’s Gallery. The opening coincides with the Artwalk held in the St. Claude Arts District of New Orleans. In addition, if you may recall, this is also the opening night of the Multispecies Salon, which I am also included in. (No worries, both events take place in the same arts district.) Prospect 1.5 (preview to the Prospect 2 Biennial) will also be taking place during this time, so numerous galleries, museums, and alternative spaces have events scheduled. So if you happen to be in New Orleans this month, now is a great time to check out the art events.

“Like a Prayer” will be up November 13th through December 30th. The opening reception will be held from 6-9pm. For more information, visit this direct link to Barrister’s Gallery. For more information regarding my work, visit www.AmyGuidry.com.

So Here’s a Recap

If you’ve been following along, you probably know by now that I had an opening last weekend. I’m sure many of my blog readers were not in the vicinity of Hammond, LA… what are the odds, really? So, I’ve posted just a few photos from the show. (You can see more where that came from in my Events section on my website, so here’s the link: www.AmyGuidry.com/events.html.) There were a lot of people in attendance, especially since the opening was held during “Hot August Night,” which is an annual art & music festival. My painting, “Cocoon,” sold during opening night. The show received a highly positive response from those in attendance. I ran out of business cards before the night was over! Note to self: bring a backup stash of cards in a ziplock bag and cram into teeny tiny purse.

So if you haven’t seen the show and are in Louisiana, you can still check out my work! My New Realm series is on display at the Oak Street Gallery in Hammond, LA at 111 North Oak St. (go figure). And for a virtual show experience, go to my website at www.AmyGuidry.com.

New 5 x 5 Addition

"Journey" by Amy Guidry; SOLD; From the New Realm series. Copyright Amy Guidry 2009.

Here is the latest painting from my “New Realm” series.  The title is “Journey” and is part of the “New Realm 5 x 5’s.”  This has been a popular size for me as it is relatively easy to find a space for a small painting, plus they are budget-friendly for just about anybody looking to add to or start an art collection.  “Journey” features one of the symbolic red and black butterflies as seen throughout “New Realm” as well as the heroine of the series.

If you are in the southwestern Louisiana area, you can pick up a copy of the May 1st edition of “Lagniappe.”  My painting will be featured in the Up Front column as well as an article about my upcoming shows.  Just look for the article titled, “Fish, Feathers, and Royalty” by Brad Goins. And if you’d like to see more of my work, go to www.AmyGuidry.com.

Women Painting Women

“Beginning” by Amy Guidry; From the New Realm series; SOLD; Copyright Amy Guidry 2009

I came across Sadie Valeri’s blog yesterday and what a great blog it is. Women Painting Women is entirely devoted to women artists and features paintings of women by women. I love the concept because, not that I think we need to distinguish between the two, but female artists often do not get the recognition that male artists do. There are many ideas as to why this is, which I won’t get into all that since I’m not looking to stand on my soapbox, just laud a fellow blogger. Anyway, I was struck by the images on her blog. The only information given is the title and size (and artist, of course), but that’s all you need, really, because it’s so moving just to look at the paintings alone. And I am thrilled to say that Sadie so kindly added my work to her blog. She chose “Beginning” from the New Realm series, which I find appropriate given the premise of the series. (You can find out more from my artist statement on my website www.AmyGuidry.com.) So check out Sadie’s blog…I’m sure you will be as excited to find it as I was.
