{"id":3248,"date":"2013-02-06T11:22:09","date_gmt":"2013-02-06T17:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artistcommentary.com\/?p=3248"},"modified":"2013-02-06T11:22:53","modified_gmt":"2013-02-06T17:22:53","slug":"the-big-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artistcommentary.com\/?p=3248","title":{"rendered":"The Big Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_3253\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3253\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/artistcommentary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Heads_II.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3253\" title=\"&quot;Heads II&quot; by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 12&quot; x 12&quot;; (c) Amy Guidry 2013\" src=\"https:\/\/artistcommentary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Heads_II-300x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artistcommentary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Heads_II-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/artistcommentary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Heads_II-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/artistcommentary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Heads_II.jpg 698w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Heads II&#8221; by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 12&#8243; x 12&#8243;; (c) Amy Guidry 2013<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There seems to be a common misconception among artists and even among the general public, for that matter, that I wanted to take a moment to dispel.\u00a0 Some are of the opinion that if they can just accomplish [insert goal here] that they will make it as an artist (although this applies to non-artists as well).\u00a0 The thing is, there will never be &#8220;one&#8221; gallery or &#8220;one&#8221; show or &#8220;one&#8221; award that will &#8220;make&#8221; you.\u00a0 I believe this misconception stems from what appears to be the overnight success of others.\u00a0 Anytime we hear about an artist or musician or athlete in the news for the first time (to our knowledge), we think they are an overnight success because we&#8217;ve never heard of them before and now they are famous.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t that they accomplished one particular goal and found instant fame.\u00a0 Sure, there is probably one particular accomplishment being highlighted in said news feature, but that&#8217;s simply because they need a hook for their story.\u00a0 The fact is, this person has been working their butt off &#8220;behind the scenes.&#8221;\u00a0 Just because we&#8217;ve never heard of them before doesn&#8217;t mean that this now-superstar wasn&#8217;t working two jobs or repeatedly getting rejected or struggling to make a name for themselves or all of the above at some point in time.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve heard of many artists that worked odd jobs and couldn&#8217;t get into galleries that are now successful.<\/p>\n<p>In order to become a success at anything, whether you are an artist or not, is to diligently apply yourself to each opportunity.\u00a0 Sure, Larry Gagosian could walk into your studio, buy your work and make you a star overnight, but VERY rarely does that ever happen.\u00a0 And even in those instances, if you were to look backward you will see a series of small steps that led up to that moment.\u00a0 You have to build your career, brick by brick, layer by layer.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no quick-fix, magic pill, or get-rich-quick scheme that will do the work for you.<\/p>\n<p>Although instant success would be nice, the good news is it&#8217;s much more realistic (and reassuring) to know that you are in control of your success.\u00a0 Rest assured that the steps you are taking now are improving your career rather than waiting around and just hoping for a lucky break.\u00a0 Take a look at what you&#8217;ve accomplished over the past year, or even over the past few years, and you will probably find that you&#8217;ve done much more than you ever thought possible.\u00a0 Now imagine what you could accomplish over the upcoming year, or five years from now, or ten.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cShoot for the moon.
